Curved lines bend around shadows and highlights, looking almost like shiny folds of blankets or fat. Text reads: its less that I want to stay sick / and more that I’m afraid of change. The thick curves move independently of the shadows and highlights, which make them look like the curves of reeds or branchless tree trunks against a cloudy sky. And in the final panel, the lines curve and spiral into the middle. I am aware that in the world where I am well / that Ive got an empty resume / Ive got no coping skills, the words on the page say. Curving and spiraling shapes make odd twisting, bulbous forms. Something about the curves in the large first panel on this page makes them look like the skin on a soup after someone tried to push it out of the way. For this book, the pages are on brown speckled paper that allows for white highlights. Deer look at us, as if they have spotted us from afar and are warily curious. Handwritten text says: let’s talk about those moments / where it gets ambiguous. The deer seem frozen in place. Text starts the page: those moments where / we stand on a blurred lines and. This page has stags with large antlers. The bottom panel is centered on the antlers, and they look almost like thick tree branches or a rib cage on top of the animals head. The text continues: make semi-conscious choices. More antlers, curling into points that are lit by the sun. Writing reads: lets dance on the very fragment of self / where others see the worst in us. This is a poem comic I made years ago for an anthology called Linequality! I always really liked this style, where I utilized parts of old representational drawings and made them into soft abstractions.
Abstract zoomed in pencil lines vibrate and shift from panel to panel. Text written in pencil says: I know your heart / saffron / shaped conchoidal. The pencil marks move more freely on this page, with less panel borders to stop them. They seem to make the shape of the space between fingers, or the place where limbs of a tree split off from the trunk. Text says: its the echo of something small. The one panel border on the page shows an inversion of shapes, a cone where the empty space was before. Text continues: dropped / and feeling its way outward. Text says: until. The word is flanked by dark tendrils overlapping into something like the shadow under the eaves of a house. In another panel below, the lines form into a fleshy looking mass, a nub or a lump. Undefined. Text says: until. Many panels again, and the abstract linework squiggles across itself like a lattice of vines, or roots under the soil. Text says: I know your heart / its / shaking and shimmering / like time lapse video. A dark shape sits near those last words, like a hole in the page.

Scratchy graphite hatching fill the panels on this page, with short repeated parallel lines of color. They give a feeling of order in the midst of chaos. Text says: I know it feels right / to conceive of myself this way / I know it feels good when others do. The hatching sometimes gives way to squiggles, still evened out by the parallel lines. Half of the figure drawings on this page are tightly constrained to line drawing, and in the other half jagged shading blurs all of the features together, suggesting so much more than showing. Text reads: but at the end of the day / Im so scared. The lack of lines on this page give a sense of soft, blurry light. Bits of my body are shown, stomach, back, half defined face. I made this comic over a decade ago for a Boston area comics anthology called Hellbound! A rare foray into horror for me. It turned out good though!! And i still really like the style I went with.
A comic where the background is black with vague gray shapes behind. Figures show up as silhouettes of mostly featureless gray pencil texture. We see a character park their bike at a street sign and attach it to the sign with a bike lock. The character is wearing glasses, and looks out to see friends waving to them. They run over to the friends and say hey. Exhausted from the running, the character leans over as they catch their breath. One of the figures comes over to them and brings their face over to the glasses wearing characters ear. A mouth opens on a vague face, and it says: we are going to explore the old factory. The glasses person gets back up and tries to look at the vague shape of hair and shadows of facial features on the figure that spoke. They ask: Jamie…? Whose voice is that? The unknown figure puts a finger up to their mouth, signifying that they need to be quiet. The glasses person says: r-right. In the dark, the shapes that make up the other figure’s face seem to morph and change. The unknown figure puts a hand on the glasses persons shoulder, and they head to join the other three. As a group, they move past trees and over a chain link fence, past parked cars and towards the vague shapes of buildings. The group finds themselves at another chain link fence, but this one has barbed wire at the top. One of them starts picking the padlock on the gate. The glasses person says: look, Im not sure we should be doing this. The unknown figure from before looks at them, and then they continue: Okay? I just dont want to go in. The unknown figure pushes them to the ground, and then as they look back up from their crumpled position on the ground, the figure puts a finger to their lips. Shh. The gate is open, and they head in.

Earlier this week, text starts off the page, a person asked me / if I was trans / because of my comics. Simple circles fill the panels on this page, and colored lines radiate out from the center, or from the outer limits of the circle. Abstract explorations continue inside and outside of the circles, sometimes giving the slight suggestion of eyeballs. Handwriting reads: they felt trans to him / they felt like a trans woman made them. Muddy squiggles fill the circles, establishing unknown shape and feeling. Text says: there was a strangeness to it / to just ask outright like that / but. Patterns of colors move through the circles, like they are peepholes to abstract worlds. Text reads: we talked a little and he / said he wanted to express something in himself / that he couldnt as a man / maybe something softer, warmer.

The strange thing about gender is, text starts, and particularly about non-binary. Drawings of a wooden shoe stretcher fill the page. Seeing little details of its unfamiliar but very foot-like form. The text continues: is that non-binary people themselves / spend so much time thinking about it. Two shoe stretchers, left and right, the strange notches near the tip, the hinge near the middle. Text says: they are reconceiving / they are analyzing / searching inwardly. The notches continue through to the other side of the toe, it is clear from seeing the underside a little. And the hinge can make this foot bend unnaturally, like its split in half. Text says: and you bring this to someone else / and they might not have thought about it at all. A knob at the top of shoe stretcher seems to be where you turn to extend or retract. The careful drawings show very clearly the way the hinge moves and the smooth textures over it all. Text says: so you hand them your thoughts / and these thoughts are not theirs / they are yours / they dont fit.

Thin branches of trees end with sparse orange leaves, like in late fall. Spindly winding twigs. Panels filled with leaves with blotches of different colors on them. At first just one leaf, then others, then a twig with many. Text reads, I believe theres a thing I call / the lump self. Bright colors define shadows and veins on the leaves. Writing reads, the uselessness / the shameful creature / the self I am when I am exhausted / and have to be in bed all day. As colors pass over the leaves, they seem to shimmer. Handwriting reads, and I believe its important to love it / to love the lump self / because its artificially split from you / because you are that self. Cool and warm colors like light and shadow. The veins showing through the leaf a big wide leaf as light goes through it. Text says, but when you get better / when you feel better / you disavow that self / you simply forget it. An iridescent maple leaf.
