The best podcast ever for UX and product people who realize they have to get better at politics if they want bigger roles.

Avoid unnecessary open-ended questions. In this Corporate Underpants segment, I share a tactic for more efficient stakeholder management:

💬 Present specific options for feedback.
👏 Celebrate when the response is, “None of these.”
That’s when true understanding begins.

Sometimes, guiding participants during UX research can be beneficial. In a clip from my #CorporateUnderpants series with Mike Neff, we discuss how transforming vague concepts into tangible examples, even if intentionally incorrect, can clear up confusion and foster understanding. #UXResearch

Mike Neff noticed a variety of opinions on 'what are we doing and why?' Translation: 😳 No consensus existed. 🤯 Nobody voiced it. In this Corporate Underpants segment, we explore the moment you realize leadership lacks unity. 💡 Without clarity, people make their own paths. #LeadershipAlignment

All data is a measurement.
But if you’re measuring the wrong thing—or don’t know what you’re aiming for—it’s just noise.

Ever wish you could mentor your younger self? Mike Neff devoured Corporate Underpants, stating, “These are the crucial insights I longed for.” It’s not just about team leadership—it’s mastering upward management, office dynamics, and dodging unexpected traps. Absorb wisdom through experience.

#Alignment isn't a thing. It's an ongoing project.
Melissa Appel and I agree on #AlignmentDecay. It's kinda like the tech workplace equivalent of The Last of Us. A fungus creeps into our work, personas go feral, goals are infected, and we start eating each other. I love this concept.

If you get asked about UX vs UI, show this photo and ask two questions:
1. Is it appealing, engaging, differentiated, on brand, easy-to-read, good contrast, typographically awesome?
2. What is the address of this building?

You're welcome.

Here's a juicy tidbit from my Corporate Underpants interview with Melissa Appel on #MiningForConflict, a key concept in the book.

Any conflict spelunkers out there?

Considering quitting? Create a Pre-Quit Checklist. Great idea from the great Melissa Appel. Some things can be fixed (and some can't). Consider it your launch strategy for flinging yourself out of a terrible job (or staying put and making things better).

Do YOU know the definition of the word "data" in your company?
No. Really. Think about it. Write it down. Ask others to as well. You will be shocked.
The Lowly Glossary = your most powerful tool.

One of the amazing, practical tools in the book Aligned by Melissa Appel and Bruce McCarthy: the stakeholder canvas. Deceptively simple and all about the process, not the product.

The real problem is almost never what 'they' think it is. From my conversation with Melissa Appel, co-author of #Aligned: When the execs didn't like the delivery time estimates so they just...changed them. And called it a delivery problem.

From my conversation with Jared Spool on Corporate Underpants: In five years, prompt engineering will sound ridiculous. The only constant in tech? People and what they need.

Jared Spool on Corporate Underpants: UX is stuck in the tactical weeds. Workday laid off 1,750 people, saving $350M. Could those teams have made more than that? If we can’t answer, UX will always be first to go.

Personas don’t work? Or do we just keep renaming them?

✔️ Proto-personas
✔️ Presumptive personas
✔️ Alignment personas (mine!)

The process matters more than the artifact.

💬 How do you define personas in your work today? 👇

Alignment isn’t about personas—it’s about the process.

But alignment personas are about process, personas, AND alignment.

UX democratization: good or bad? Or actually just 'delegation'?
What’s the right balance between participation and expertise?
And what about ... training??

As always, @Jared Spool gets to the heart of the debate.

Another tidbit from my S1E4 interview with Adam Staffa. No one remembers the problems once you solve them. Capture the 'before' so you can get credit for the 'after.;

Fix a problem, and nobody remembers the problem.

If alignment works, it looks obvious. Set goals before starting so leadership sees your impact.

Need leadership to listen? Start small—or bring in backup.

If you don’t have trust yet, bring in an outside consultant who can push leadership forward.

Nobody ever "already has" business goals.

❌ Great! Send them over.
⏳ Silence.

The fix? Call it something they can’t say no to.
✅ “Discovery”
✅ “Strategy”
✅ “Stakeholder Alignment”
