Just a dude who loves being a dad and who chills out with horror movies and TTRPGs. Currently stuck in the middle of the country and pining for the northeast.
I went to a mystery movie marathon at my local Alamo Drafthouse on Saturday. I was pretty happy with the 4 films they showed:
1) The Gore Gore Girls
2) Retribution
3) Possessor (uncut)
4) Demons.

The real fun was getting a new kitten Sunday, and my wife discovering he's prone to late night zoomies.

Fun Fact:
If Stephen Miller suddenly finds himself within 10 feet of a person with skin a darker shade than milk, he drops one of his wriggling appendages to the ground as a distraction and runs away while pissing himself.

Today is my 49th birthday, and I plan to celebrate by eating a lot of ice cream and cupcakes; and by watching a classic horror film that I have shockingly never seen before (The Howling).

This is my first comic, given to me by my dad many years ago. It's a well-worn book in the oversized treasury edition format.

Dad's been gone for almost 26 years now, and today would have been his 77th birthday. It was a perfect day to see Superman with my daughter while thinking of Dad.

New Law Proposal:

If you see someone out in public with merch supporting the newly constructed concentration camp in Florida, you should legally be allowed to punch them in the teeth until you are forearm deep in their head.

One of the nice things about my town just south of Omaha is that every Father's Day weekend, there is a carnival set up just 3 blocks from my house.
I get to celebrate by spoiling myself with nothing but fair food and food-truck meals for 3 days.

I finally got out and saw Sinners last night. That film is going to be bouncing around in my head for a long time.

So far, I've only watched about 24 horror movies this year. But, I have recently binged all but the last 4 episodes of Evil, and it has been a fantastic distraction from all the stupidity currently occupying reality.

Sure, it seems like the world is falling apart right now, but today, my daughter played D&D for the first time in a game I ran for her, her mom, and her best friend. She loved it, and the smiles from those moments mean a hell of a lot.

Instead of my normal facility/group home, I'm spending the overnight shift sitting in a dark ICU room. One of my guys had surgery today, so I'm helping the staff out by monitoring him and advocating on his behalf.
It's not something I mind doing, but it is quite dull.

I went out and saw Heart Eyes tonight, and it was a blast!

@joshruben.bsky.social continues to make movies that make me hate the world a little less.

Sure, the world is burning and all, but Baroness just announced a tour passing through my area that is focused on just their Red and Blue albums, and I'm going to savor this little bit of joy.

Times are hard, and there are a lot of people who need help. Help where you can, but remember that you can only do so much for others before you start neglecting your own health and happiness.

Set aside some time for yourself because you can't help anyone if you burn yourself out.
people over 30 quote this with some life advice for the rest of us?

Tonight, I read The Night Guest in as appropriate a setting I could think of: during my quiet overnight shift in a long-term care home, surrounded by sleeping clients.

It was one of the best single-session reads I've had in a long time!

I just completed Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. The end credits are long as hell, but it was nice to see a tribute to Tony Todd.

Also, something I'd never seen before: credit given for every painting depicted in the game. And there are quite a few.

I have a big ask. My 9yo son is autistic and he’s been raising a betta fish he named Kevin. Yesterday He asked if he could “share a photo of Kevin with the whole world“. I don’t know if this will work, but a dad’s gotta try. Like and share if that’s your thing. Kevin says hi! 🐟👋

A quiet weekend.
I watched The Empty Man last night and will watch more horror films today.
My weekly game is canceled tomorrow, so I'm going to introduce my daughter to Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade over lunch. On Monday, I have tickets to Wolf Man to help me ignore that shit show in D.C.

Skeleton Crew really stuck the landing, in my opinion. And I really hope we get to see more of this bright little corner of the star wars galaxy.

A few years ago, Josh Ruben paid for a year subscription for Fangoria for me. I’d been going through a tough time and couldn’t afford it. It was a lifeline in a very darky time.

That’s all to say, he’s good people. Donate if you can! www.gofundme.com/f/show-love-...

In light of the dread that many of us are feeling, I've chosen to distract myself tonight by going to see Possession at the Alamo Drafthouse near me. It's a movie I have meant to see for some time, but I was holding out until I could catch it on the big screen.

Our daughter wanted to go to bed early last night, so me and the wife got to pick something a little edgier for family movie night.

We decided to watch Monkey Man (written, directed, produced, and starring Dev Patel).

Now I'm irritated that I missed it at the theater, because it was a blast.

After taking a couple of days to rest and ponder the coming shitscape, I sat down this morning to watch my first horror film of the new year:

A Wounded Fawn.

@JoshRuben.bsky.social you play fundamentally deranged very well... a little too well.

I'm finishing up 2024 having watched a total of 155 horror films. I started the year with Prince of Darkness, and ended it with Bride of Chucky.
