With the news of Béla Tarr's passing, one of my most admired directors, I tracked down a box set of (most) his career finally. Starting from his beginning, Family Plot (1979), it's imperfect but the themes lasted for his whole career.

A ★★★½ review of Family Nest (1979)
With the passing of one of my idols Béla Tarr on January 6th 2026, I finally caved in and found the giant Curzon box set which contained all his films, even the obscurest entries and the short films, ...

It would've been inconceivable a decade ago for a Park Chan-Wook film to appear in a British multiplex, expect his sole American production, but today I was able to see No Other Choice close to home. So much for the better, and yes, the film's great.

The Phoenician Scheme (2025), revisiting it, is still very good. I could have left it lost among the strong films from last year, but I was thankfully reminded Wes Anderson even being effortless is a huge achievement nonetheless.

Review: letterboxd.com/catgoblin5/f...
A ★★★★ review of The Phoenician Scheme (2025)
Phoenician, and Wes Anderson's style in general, manages to go from a real sick sense of humour, as someone gets blown in half in the first few minutes, and some poignant commentary, yet has a froth a...

Rather than trying to catelogue films from the ongoing Sundance Film Festival, and in mind there's Rotterdam and Berlin soon into February, I'll keep it logged in a list below. And, even if some may not get UK releases, I want to catch up with them somehow.

2026 Festival Films I Want To See (Even if By 2027...)

The Voice of Hind Rajab (2025) is not a film I feel is appropriate to "review", more so with the silly username and avatar image. But, for those comfortable in seeing this, just go see the film.

Review: letterboxd.com/catgoblin5/f...
A ★★★★ review of The Voice of Hind Rajab (2025)
Watched theatrically on 20 Jan 2026 Attempting to "review" The Voice of Hind Rajab feels pointless, completely at odds with out of five star scores, cute usernames and even the idea of a "day out" to ...

Everything so far from Sundance is compelling from the reviews, but from a previous post, I happy to hear that Gregg Araki's I Want Your Sex may live up as a return to feature films as a fan.

I forgot how distinct Lucio Fulci's The Beyond was even in his career, let alone Italian horror films. Revisiting it felt like watching one of the most grandiose of these notorious, bloody films.

Review: letterboxd.com/catgoblin5/f...
A ★★★★★ review of The Beyond (1981)
To enter the world of The Beyond is to go into one of Lucio Fulci's most esoteric films despite it being, paradoxically, one of his most well know. Its also, returning to it, far more aware of its ton...

Since I want to catch up, and add films to the year's To Watch list, Sundance Film Festival has started and the idea of a horror film with its perverse take on diet crazes immediately stuck out:

Hell, even the Golden Raspberries "Worst Pictures" this year are a compelling handful even in that morbid carcrash way I might regret if I watch them. Five compelling follies in their own distinct ways.

The Oscars decided to catch me off guard in the best of ways this year. Train Dreams and Marty Supreme notwithstanding, and The Secret Agent coming to UK cinemas soon, I've ended up accidentally seeing three quarters of the Best Picture winners.

A thing that irks me about our brave new world is that when I encounter a photo I've never seen before (the one on the left) I worry that it's an AI forgery, even though I've seen variations on it (as at the right) for decades.

(I've found the left one posted back to 2012, so OK.)

Berlin Film Festival 2026 has been announced fully with great news. Happy to see directors Karim Aïnouz and Hanna Bergholm return. Delighted to see Kornél Mundruczó return, and through A New Dawn, happy an anime feature is also in the competition.

It took too long to watch A Better Tomorrow (1986), but on the eve of a lot of John Woo films finally getting proper restored released in Britain, it was perfectly timed. More so as I can now appreciate this as both great melodrama action cinema.

Hamnet was a film I wasn't really that inclined to see, which can be blamed for its trailer being so inappropriate for a far more moving production, with far more nuisance in a deeply moving narrative.

Thanks to Tubi UK, I was able to revisit Christiane Cegavske's stop motion film Blood Tea and Red String (2006). Still as beautiful and unique as the last time I saw it, and it annoys it never get a proper UK release.

My Doris Wishman review continues to a film soon to celebrate its 60th birthday, Another Day, Another Man (1966). It's also an acquired taste, but even its unintentional moments (and a clown portrait) are starting to interest me greatly.
January 18, 2026 at 5:18 PM
This winter, I went fully into watching the films of Doris Wishman. A Taste of Flesh (1966), as the other films of hers, is an acquired taste but there's a weird mesmerising tone to films like this.

Review: letterboxd.com/catgoblin5/f...
A ★★★½ review of A Taste of Flesh (1967)

Best of 2025 Films Part 1

Rather than try to create a lengthy Best Films of 2025, I want to split it over the next few days in bit sized form, around a handful of parts. All of these are films I may change my mind on, for the better or for worse, on rewatches but they stood out for last year.

Also revisited a film I saw at a horror festival, yet inexplicitly never got a UK release. Tragedy Girls, even if I had to import a Blu-Ray copy, thankfully stayed as delicious misanthropic and funny as I remembered back from that film screening back then.
