Pascal endorses doom scrolling confirmed
I've been thinking about this line from Pascal's Pensées lately. It does feel like a lot of life is simply finding things to avoid having to think about life, how empty and meaningless it can feel, or how hopeless it can be.

I hate doing stuff as much as the next person...

In fact I hate doing stuff way more than the next person. Can the next person be the one doing the stuff?

I've started a diary. I wonder if this means fewer posts. Is that what Biggy meant?

Idea for an online service: a site that takes 2 different books and gives you a reading list that gradually morphs the style and genre of the first book into the second.

E.g. if the first is Agatha Christie and the second is some cookbook, then murder mysteries increasingly about food and chefs.

The thing you need to know about me baby, is that I only get into the shower if it's at my *exact* body temperature. Sorry if that's a deal breaker.

Pet peeve: someone makes a parody version of a famous song verse, but doesn't respect the meter.

Is it better to have some great achievement in something that ends up totally and utterly irrelevant, like phrenology or homeopathy, or to just do nothing noteworthy your whole life?

Please say the latter.

I wrote a somewhat self indulgent talk about building (verified) systems with LLMs, and now I'm somewhat self indulgently sharing it:

I think people who do therapy secretly *want* this to be true, because it would mean our problems aren't mundane.

But the tragedy of life is that even the horrible stuff is pretty run-of-the-mill.

Question from @sandmouth.bsky.social : does LPO prove strong normalization of type annotated SKI?

Seems like it does, which surprises me a little.

Was editing and noticed that if you rotate-left "those" you get "ethos". Was curious how many of these are in English. Big dicts have a lot of junk, and most endings in "s" are for plurals. Here's a good list of rotwords.

I'm not one to think one country is better than another, but I gotta say French comic stores go pretty hard compared to American ones

Flying out of the US of A for slightly greener pastures in an hour.

Good I feel like a coward. Not sure what the moral course of action is right now.

Fighting the fascists in every possible way, I imagine. Why have we let this happen? Where's the fucking 2nd amendment folk now?

The "lens philosophy" seems to rely on an isomorphism between
{ get : s -> a; set : s -> a -> s}

And

for all f, Functor f => (a -> f a) -> s -> f s

Is there a general philosophy for concocting these kinds of isos?

Intensions we're good, but...
It's well known that set intersection is associative. Unfortunately:

import Data.Set
n = 20_000_000
evens = fromList [0,2..n]
odds = fromList [1,3..n]
ends = fromList [0,n]
fast = evens `intersection` (odds `intersection` ends)
slow = (evens `intersection` odds) `intersection` ends

Not *my* sadness, true. But yours...
