It’s a new year, so it seems as good a time as any to share some exciting news. I’m thrilled to say I’ll be joining the History Department at the University of Wyoming in the fall, coming home to the Mountain West after a decade away.

Moe is ready to be a cowdog.

Some Civil War West to start your week!
In our latest digital history column, Cecily Zander writes about the Grand Army of the Potomac national encampment held in Denver, CO, in July 1883—and how and why its attendees idealized the American West. Read it here: bit.ly/4hJ99IH #CivilWar @cnzander.bsky.social
Veterans Visit an Idealized West
A gathering of Union veterans in 1880s Colorado sheds light on the country's attitude toward the American West—both as a space for reconciliation and as a prize.

Hello new followers and friends. I am a historian of the American West during the Civil War era, currently writing about Lincoln and the West for Liveright. I spend most of my time entertaining my border collie, Moe, who would write a history of ball, if he could type.

Excellent OAH book haul, as well, including @cnzander.bsky.social's exciting new work, John Rodrigue's award-winning Freedom's Crescent, and Justene Hill Edward's excellent book. It was especially cool to get my hands on an early copy of Tony Kaye's Nat Turner bio, finished by Greg Downs.
