💸 A report from the Public Accounts Committee shows that Britain's F-35 programme is in disarray and the costings are "unrealistic."

With the budget coming up, we need much greater scrutiny on military spending hikes and nuke expansion.

Running across more than six kilometres of waterfront, the dockyard has been part of the landscape for generations. It dominates the western edge of the South West England city, encased by high fenced walls, security cameras and warning signs about police dogs and potential arrest for ‘unauthorized activity’. The main refit and maintenance area is owned and operated by British defence company Babcock International, which in 2024 made $1,273 million in revenue from nuclear weapons work. In 2025, it celebrated a 51 per cent surge in profit." But Plymouth itself has not seen the same boost. ‘Most of the money generated goes out of the city,’ says local campaigner Tony Staunton, who is also the vice chair of the Campaign For Nuclear Disarmament (CND). Authorities say that Devonport generates around 10 per cent of Plymouth’s income, but neighbourhoods next to the dockyard remain among the poorest five per cent in the country. Devonport doesn’t just work on operational nuclear submarines, it is also a ‘graveyard’ for retired ones. Twelve out of the 16 decommissioned submarines at Devonport are still carrying their fuel – effectively a stockpile of nuclear waste. Over the last 30 years, at least 10 serious radioactive leaks have been documented at Devonport, and chemicals like plutonium, americium and tritium have been found on the Plymouth coastline, including at a wildlife reserve close to the dockyard. Support the hunger strikers – protest will now go ahead at the Ministry of Justice despite police pressure Last night the Metropolitan Police contacted the Palestine Coalition threatening to effectively ban our planned protest today. They indicated their intention to ban the protest from virtually the whole of central London including Whitehall and the entire area around Parliament and that anyone protesting for Palestine within these areas would be at risk of arrest. The reason given by the police is that there is a menorah located in Trafalgar Square, grotesquely conflating protest with terrorism and implying that the Palestinian community and others wishing to protest in support of their rights are an inherent threat to Jewish people. While this is just the latest incident in the use of repressive police powers to target those speaking out for Palestinian rights, had the ban been imposed as the police originally intended, it would have marked a major escalation of attacks on freedom of expression and assembly. It also would have been a new low in attempts to demonise and criminalise support for Palestinian rights. This would have played into the false presentation of support for Palestinian rights as something that is in opposition to concerns for the safety of Jews and other minority communities, a concern which we share and have always affirmed. As it stands, following significant pressure, the police have conceded that our protest can go ahead at the Ministry of Justice – a key target for our demands and those of the hunger strikers – rather than at Downing Street. Preventing a protest at the seat of government power still amounts to a dangerous precedent and in the coming days we will have more to say about this and other discriminatory attempts to silence protests for Palestine, including the latest plans to criminalise chants and slogans. But today, at this critical juncture, what matters most is that we raise our voices in solidarity with the 8 imprisoned activists currently on hunger strike in British prisons, several of whom have now been hospitalised. We will not be distracted from that goal. We thank all of the activists, those from the Palestinian, Jewish and Muslim communities, trade unionists, human rights, civil liberties and faith organisations, MPs and members of the London Assembly and House of Lords who contacted the Metropolitan Police to demand that our protest be allowed to proceed.

Palestine Coalition statement on the hunger strikers We stand in solidarity with the eight imprisoned activists associated with Palestine Action, several of whom have now reached over 40 days of their hunger strike. Their condition is critical. Five have already been hospitalised, and each passing day brings the risk of irreversible harm. These young people – none of whom have been convicted – have been held in extraordinary pre-trial detention, with intensifying restrictions on their mail, calls, visits, and work. These measures target not only their bodies but their ability to stay connected to their families, communities, and the outside world. For many, this has been ongoing for over a year – with some trial dates not scheduled until 2027 – simply for taking action to stop the ongoing genocide in Gaza. Despite several UN Rapporteurs describing their treatment as constituting “enforced disappearance,” and doctors warning they are in the danger zone where irreparable harm is likely, David Lammy has refused to meet with their families or representatives. This refusal to engage is not an oversight – it is a deliberate political choice. The government has consistently chosen to use repressive policing powers to try to silence those protesting against Israel’s genocide in Gaza. It is now choosing to ignore this emergency, suppress those raising the alarm, and shield the state’s complicity in the violence these hunger strikers sought to prevent. While the genocide in Gaza continues – with daily violations of the so-called ceasefire – the government carries on with business as usual. The architects and enablers of this violence go unpunished, while these prisoners, who acted to stop it, are left to suffer in indefinite detention. The criminalisation and vilification of Palestine solidarity will not stop people from standing against mass violence or demanding accountability; it only reflects the discomfort of a political order confronted by its own complicity. We will be protesting on Wednesday evening outside Downing Street. We support the prisoners’ demands and call for their immediate release on bail and an end to Britain’s complicity in Israel’s ongoing genocide. We will not be silenced in our solidarity with the Palestinian people.
