Frank Jay Haynes was a photographer of life in the American West and the early days of Yellowstone National Park. Arriving in Yellowstone in the 1880s, he accompanied expeditions into the park, serving as official photographer. From canyon bottoms to mountain peaks, Haynes took his cameras to locations where he could capture unique and artistic views. In this photograph, he documented the immense space of the landscape, made particularly apparent by the inclusion of a small figure standing on the cliff at the right.

Du Camp was the first photographer to depict the marvels of ancient Egypt. In 1849 a scholarly association commissioned the young writer to document Egyptian monuments and their hieroglyphics. He learned to photograph shortly before embarking for Egypt in the company of the young novelist Gustave Flaubert. In 1852 Du Camp published an album of photographs of Egypt, Nubia, Palestine, and Syria, which brought him widespread recognition. Just as Du Camp followed in the footsteps of earlier painters and scholars,later photographers like Beato often echoed his choices of subject matter.

By nature and by experience gained during the Civil War, O’Sullivan was ideally suited for the physical and creative demands required of the official photographer for the geological exploration of the fortieth parallel, led by the enterprising Yale geologist Clarence King. The goal of the expedition was to survey the geological structure and natural resources of a swath of territory 100 miles wide, from the eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains across the Great Basin to the Rocky Mountains. While on the expedition in 1867–69 and 1872, O’Sullivan simultaneously pursued his own interest in perfecting a balanced, aesthetic style of landscape photography while providing a faithful record of the natural terrain. As typified in this print, he positioned the camera at a distance parallel to the majestic scenery, presenting a shallow, flattened depiction of space. The image describes in sharp detail the sheer beauty and rugged scale of this Western landscape.

Flooded with bright light and enveloped in deep shadows, this romantic landscape is the remarkable achievement of the early French photographer Chauvassaignes, about whom little biographical information is known. His mastery of composition and technique reveals itself in this picturesque composition of water, stream banks, trees, and foliage, evoking a feeling of great tranquility. Inspired by the compositions of paintings and lithographs, Chauvassaignes exploited the inherent characteristics of the paper negative, enabling him to subordinate details while emphasizing the effects of light and shadow. The idyllic view, contemplated by a solitary seated gentleman, recedes into deep space through flickering sunlight and leafy boughs. A photographer with a trained and sophisticated eye, Chauvassaignes conveyed an uncommon intimacy in this forest landscape, a favorite subject of mid 19th-century artists.

One of the most inventive and influential French photographers of the 1850s, Le Gray was widely known for his landmark studies taken in the Forest of Fontainbleau, near Paris, from about 1849 to 1857. The photographs share a kinship with the work of the Barbizon painters, such as Corot, Daubigny, and Millet, who also worked there. Le Gray skillfully overcame technical problems to master the photographing of greenery and dark areas and to exploit the visual effects of light and atmosphere. In this enchanting scene, the viewer is drawn almost magnetically into a carriage trail surrounded by a dense archway of trees with sparkling sunlight filtering through the leaves.
