Silip mushrooms (Armillaria polymyces or Armillaria obscura) are a delicacy in the Q’eqchi’ Maya gastronomic tradition. On December 31, 2024 we harvested over 120 pounds of mushrooms and froze them to serve to our students and guests at Community Cloud Forest Conservation, Cobán, Guatemala.

Cloud forests are amazing places. For one or two days each year the cloud forests around Cobán are suddenly filled with an amazingly delicious mushroom, called Silip in the Q'eqchi' Maya language. Also known as Armillaria polymyces or
Armillaria obscura to the botanically minded.
