I’m still with @nationalobserver.com, but as of today, I’m reporting from Toronto! Excited to cover climate, energy and the environment from a new perspective — please reach out with story ideas or just to say hi ☺️

In the week since it was published, this story has become one of our most read of 2025.

“Every single semester, a student raises their hand: 'Professor, is there any hope on climate change?' How about this year when the new semester starts in January, you get to look them in the eye and answer."
This University of Toronto Professor wants Carney to answer to her students
Each year, University of Toronto professor Laura Tozer updates a slide deck that she presents to her graduate students on the state of climate policy in Canada. This year, she is deleting everything.

For @nationalobserver.com, I spoke with U of T’s Laura Tozer.
Last year, she was adding climate policies to her lecture slides. This year, she’s deleting them, and asking Prime Minister Mark Carney to explain the rollbacks directly to her students.

It has been so gratifying to work with the incredible staff at @nationalobserver.com as EIC this year. I published this letter to our readers and supporters to document some of the impact we had this year and plans for 2026.

Some highlights:
A letter from Jimmy Thomson on impact
As editor-in-chief, I believe you have a right to know how we’ve spent your dollars. But how to quantify impact when so much of what we do happens inside the minds of the people we reach?

Approved! 20 km of new bike lanes despite Bill 60! "The new lanes are in 'parts of the city that often don't get this type of infrastructure, so that's a really good news story for those parts of the city,' said Michael Longfield, executive director of Cycle Toronto."
NEW for @nationalobserver.com. Despite efforts from the Ford government to limit bike lanes, Toronto council has approved over 20km of new cycling routes. City staff says because the plans don't requite the removal of vehicle lanes, they are legal under Bill 60.

Update from Toronto city council yesterday re the drafting of a maximum temperature policy by this upcoming summer, and its implementation in 2027. Staff will come back with a drafted bylaw by May. Earlier than the June deadline discussed by executive council last week!

Great read from @natashabulowski.bsky.social for @nationalobserver.com. Alberta is pitching AI data centres as the next oil boom. It's fitting when you think of the impacts they'll have on communities, which will have to pony up billions of litres of water+commit to locking in more gas-fired power.

Municipalities across Alberta are trying to figure out whether they can — or should — try to cash in on the influx of AI data centre developers looking to set up shop in the province. For some council...

For @nationalobserver.com. One funding stream for free AC units in Toronto is failing the people it’s meant to protect. Just 25 recipients in 2 years. One case: an 85-year-old with multiple chronic illnesses denied for having $700 in his bank account.

This summer in Toronto could be the last without a bylaw requiring landlords to keep rental units at a safe temperature during increasingly hot summers. Mayor Olivia Chow called for the drafting of a max temperature policy by this upcoming summer + implementation in 2027. For @nationalobserver.com

Mayor Olivia Chow has requested the drafting of a new bylaw that would require landlords to keep rental units cool in the city's increasingly hot summers, just as heat is required in the winter.

Important context from @woodsideful.bsky.social on recent claims from Carney. While production of both oil + gas has increased over the past decade, jobs have decreased. These companies are not interested in creating jobs, they want to make more money + extract more oil and gas with fewer workers.
Exclusive: Fossil fuel workers won’t be saved by Carney’s oil and gas boosterism
A new pipeline won’t lead to new jobs in the oil and gas sector, and the only question for government officials is whether or not to plan for the inevitable energy transition, according to new researc...

New for @nationalobserver.com on funding from the Ontario government for winter roads. Climate change is making ice roads more expensive to build and maintain, and any costs that aren't covered by the feds or the province are left to the First Nations that rely on them.
