The UK does need a chunk of grid upgrade, but £80bn is a lot when there’s such a challenge with energy bills

Surely we need a clear justification for every major transmission project

If these justifications are essentially secret, it’s a huge governance fail

SSE is a winner in the great grid upgrade. Who is looking out for consumers and small businesses? | Nils Pratley
Nobody doubts chunky spending is necessary to improve the grid. But how much of that money will be funded through consumer bills?

It is perhaps unsurprising that a boiler lobbyist is campaigning against reforms to cut electricity bills

For zonal pricing:

- The independent energy system operator
- The independent energy regulator
- The independent energy systems catapult (remit: Net Zero acceleration)
- Consumer advocates

Against zonal pricing:

- Vested interests
- Rent seekers

Great Britain wastes billions of pounds switching off wind turbines & wasting energy.

Zonal energy pricing would put that energy to work & make bills cheaper.

Great to see Britain’s “build build build” pro-renewables campaign making the case for zonal pricing.

The renewables sector puts its own pipeline at risk if it doesn’t support market reforms to reduce bills. People are losing patience.
Government should back cheaper local energy.

Slashing the cost of energy for those who live close to where it’s produced can cut bills for everyone, putting money in people’s pockets and encouraging businesses to invest.

Renewable energy could deliver British consumers some of the cheapest electricity prices in Europe.

But until we have locational pricing, we’re just paying wind farms to switch off.
