Six cigarette butts in just 4 feet of Harbor sidewalk - 15 feet from the ocean. 🚬🌊 They’re plastic. They don’t biodegrade -they fragment into toxic microplastics. Santa Cruz has taken an important step: filtered cigarettes won’t be sold here starting in 2027. #PlasticPollution #OceanHealth #COI

CMDR Day 2: LCA of a derelict fishing net - from reef to recycled plastic lumber. Every step adds cost: fuel, labor, emissions, & energy. Then to H-POWER, where 2,000 trucks/day = 700,000 tons/year of trash converted to electricity. The landfill is just a backup - and nearly full. #CMDR #HPOWER

Day 1 at CMDR: A stellar team - led by Mafalda de Freitas, M.S., with Co-Director Dr. Jennifer Lynch - guided participants through recycling methods and derelict fishing gear sourcing. Roughly 80% of Hawaiʻi's marine debris is ALDFG from distant fleets. More to come. #PlasticPollution #CMDR #HPU

On the first swim in O‘ahu waters, a piece of biofouled marine debris floated right in front of COI’s Executive Director - a fitting start to a week focused on solutions.

COI will post daily updates from the CMDR Recycling Marine Debris course. Stay tuned.

Cabrillo student Leah M. partnered with COI for her Action for Sustainability course. Using EPAP, she compared plastic at two beaches, finding 3x more at one beach. Her takeaway? Real change starts with youth education & behavior shift. #EPAP #PlasticPollution #OceanConservation #StudentResearch
