As Clean Heat Minnesota works to transition communities onto clean, affordable energy to power our lives, a key aspect of our work is helping communities see first-hand how energy systems can better serve us. 1/
Clean Heat Minnesota - November Blog Post: Ayada Leads helps Minnesotans understand the health impacts of gas stoves. Ayada Leads met with participants to explain how the air pollution monitoring program works. The project included both homeowners and renters, who face the challenge of not being able to simply replace their gas stove if they’d like to. “We wanted to show that renters and low-income families aren’t left out of the conversation,” says Ayan Derie, Ayada Leads’ policy coordinator. The “aha!” moment: participants didn’t just see the data, they felt it. One participant in Ayada Leads’ project had asthma, which can be worsened by air pollution from gas stove use. She decided to switch from her gas stove to an induction cooktop after seeing her results. By switching to induction, she won’t have to worry about the pollutants while cooking.

Instead, utilities make their money by building new infrastructure, such as pipelines, and replacing outdated infrastructure. MINNPOST As Minnesota curbs climate emissions, what’s the future of natural gas? Gas utilities are pitching a wide range of ideas to state regulators, but climate and consumer advocates say a shift to electricity is needed. MINNPOST One northern Minnesota homeowner waded into a process normally reserved for lawyers and policy wonks to say, in effect: It’s working for me. “We were more than impressed by the performance of our heat pump despite repeated suggestions by the HVAC contractors we consulted that we would need a lot of additional back-up heat,” Grand Rapids resident Garrett Holl wrote in a letter  MINNPOST “We’re pretty concerned about the ratepayer risk in continued business as usual [and the] line extension allowance is part of that.” said Annie Levenson-Falk at Citizens Utility Board of Minnesota MINNPOST “A lot of groups have said on the record, including utilities, that it’s significantly more cost-effective to electrify new construction than it is to decarbonize it at a later date,” said Caitlin Eichten at Fresh Energy.

🗞️ Public News Service: MN regulators ready for big decision on natural gas connections The Citizens Utility Board cites data showing the average cost to connect a new customer to CenterPoint Energy’s system in 2021 was $2,606. But over a 40-year recovery period, the utility would earn an additional return of $4,179, paid for by its customers on top of the initial investment Minnesota regulators are weighing feedback on a potential policy change tied to natural gas infrastructure. The state could phase out gas line extension allowances, where current ratepayers cover the cost of connecting new developments to these systems. The Public Utilities Commission just wrapped up a public comment period as it considers the future of this decades-old policy. When new housing or a commercial building goes up, service pipelines are needed. New properties often aren't charged for those connections, with the cost spread out among existing customers. Clean Heat Minnesota's Coalition Manager Natalie Cook said with non-gas options like heat pumps now part of the mix, the allowances are outdated. "So, new customers could still get gas service," said Cook. "They will need to just pay for it directly to connect to the gas system, and we think that's fair." If natural gas expansion slows, the coalition warns future rate increases to fund new connections will disproportionately impact renters and low-income households. And the Citizens Utility Board argues gas companies profit off of extension allowances. For human health impacts, Twin Cities pediatrician Dr. Curt Nordgaard said experts are concerned that natural gas appliances contribute to childhood asthma. "We know that this is a problem," said Nordgaard, "and one of the things we should do is really think carefully about continuing to put these appliances in new homes." Health experts say gas stoves can still leak harmful pollutants, even when turned off. A number of key organizations, including the American Public Health Association, have detailed these concerns.
