Happy birthday to Charles Darwin, who wrote one of the most poetic lines ever dropped in scientific writing:
"There is grandeur in this view of life - that from so simple a beginning, endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved."

Introduction time, my name is Ed Moody and I am a phylogeneticist focusing on deep time, I'm currently working on the evolution of membrane lipids in Archaea and Bacteria, and my most recent publication was looking at the Last Universal Common Ancestor: www.nature.com/articles/s41...
The nature of the last universal common ancestor and its impact on the early Earth system - Nature Ecology & Evolution
Integration of phylogenetics, comparative genomics and palaeobiological approaches suggests that the last universal common ancestor lived about 4.2 billion years ago and was a complex prokaryote-grade...

Dracula Orchids Trick and Treat Their Fly Pollinators 📝 🧵
https://botany.fyi/kukye7

Dracula orchids use a clever mix of mushroom mimicry and food rewards to attract fly pollinators, challenging previous assumptions about their pollination strategy.

Pollination ecology of Dracula erythrochaete (Orchidaceae): brood-site imitation or food deception?
Abstract. Pleurothallidinae is the most diverse Neotropical subtribe in Orchidaceae and is almost exclusively pollinated by insects of the order Diptera. D

The Serra do Mar is a mountain range stretching about 1500 km. Like the entire #AtlanticForest to which it belongs, this ecoregion still harbors great biodiversity, despite much of its natural ecosystems having been destroyed by human activities.
