Rewatched IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT admiring how Jafar Panahi uses the restrictions placed on him to develop his own distinct film style. This is one of his best. Moral ambiguity is further complicated by the characters plagued with almost paralysing doubt. It’s tense, dramatic and cynically humorous.

THE SECRET AGENT is a smart and evocative film about living in an authoritarian state. It is a bittersweet reflection on how facts get distorted, memories fade and questions remain unanswered, but life goes on and there are always people who keep asking those questions.

I really fell for IS THIS THING ON? and not just because it’s a film about middle-age and separation that offers hope for a second act, but that helps. Will Arnett in full dramatic mode is a revelation and somehow Laura Dern does the impossible by making me love her even more than ever.

I'm back on @3rrrfm.bsky.social tonight at 7pm, filling in on Primal Screen. There's no theme this week, just me playing as much film music as I can within the hour. Tune in www.rrr.org.au

MARTY SUPREME is in the spirit of GOOD TIME and UNCUT GEMS where the likeable but infuriating lead character is an agent of chaos, and the energetic film style conveys how much events are spiralling out of control. Chalamet really stands out as somebody you want to see triumph and also brought down.

Catherine O'Hara was so incredibly funny. Her expressions alone were comedic masterpieces. She was such a warm and generous performer that she never came across as wanting to standout or steal the scene, but of course, she often always did. Everything she was in was made better by her being in it.

This essay by @mrdtjames.bsky.social, highlighting the blatant selective outrage over acts of violence, is precise and to the point, and very much worth your time.
Daniel James on the Perth pipe bomb
At Forrest Place in Boorloo (Perth), on what this country officially calls Australia Day, around 2,500 people gathered to mark Invasion Day. They listened to speakers, held banners and, for a few…

I finally managed to take a good photo of Misty! (And don't worry, I will calm down on the new cat pics soon. Maybe.)

HAMNET is spell-bounding and so very sad, this is a deeply felt film about love, grief and the power of art. I’ve always really liked Jessie Buckley, but she is transcendent in this. Likewise Paul Mescal, and the child actors are some of the best I’ve seen. Watching this was a beautiful experience.

My new cat might actually be a Muppet.

28 YEARS LATER: THE BONE TEMPLE continues the profane folk horror vibes to be a wonderfully vicious film about religious belief at its most perverse and violently self justifying. The gang of sadistic fanatics dress like Jimmy Savile is a nice and nasty touch that should ensure nobody cosplays them.

Misty update: she adores my son, but is unimpressed with me. She'll be even less friendly after I take her to the vet next week. But I'm not too worried and it's kind of funny having an antagonist relationship with a cat.

Park Chan-wook has always had a flair for black comedy and NO OTHER CHOICE is his most straightforwardly comedic film yet. Its premise of a man resorting to violence to regain financial security and social status allows Park plenty of room for his hyperreal film style and unexpected narrative turns.

I KNOW WHERE I’M GOING! is a Powell and Pressburger film I've long neglected watching. I loved its lack of sentimentality while still being sincere, and there's a great tension between moments of whimsy and aspects of social satire. Stunning cinematography and a bonus hilarious graphic match cut.

I wanted to finally get a new cat but hadn’t planned on getting one just yet. Nevertheless, when my lovely neighbour told me they were too sick to look after their beloved cat anymore and would I like to take over ownership, I said yes. Photos once the cat comes out from behind the fridge.

Richard Linklater's NOUVELLE VAGUE is released today and it's a wonderfully entertaining account of the making of the French New Wave milestone BREATHLESS. Nice to remember that before becoming a didactic scold, Jean-Luc Godard's notorious self-righteousness was once offset by playfulness and charm.

I have treated myself and my family to a copy of the FLOW board game and without wanting to boast too much, we have just managed to get all the animals safely to their boat.

Finally watching the DVD of Lumière Brothers films that I bought almost 20 years ago when visiting Musée Lumière, was a delightful way to start my film-watching year. Logging the 80+ films on Letterboxd was insane and I've ruined my end of year stats for 2026 already, but I have no regrets.
January 5, 2026 at 12:18 PM
I’m still relatively new to @letterboxd.social and even newer to having stats, but posting them is quite fun isn’t it. Not sure what this says about me but I did at least achieve my goal of not watching as much as I have done in previous years.
