Actresses on My Fearless Performance Thread boxd.it/GLVY6

For months, worked on 🧵: 28 performances representing what I call "all-in" acting. No Oscar winning roles, includes different genres, eras, countries. Totally arbitrary! Here's recap & list. Or you can page thru🧵 for comments.

My ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ review of VISITOR Q boxd.it/cuZQFj

Unrelenting depravity, but employs a perverse sense of logic that feels almost hopeful.

Miike is provocateur, seeing how far he can push. Balancing black comedy, social commentary & vile imagery...you may love or hate, but won't be apathetic.

My ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 review of THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN boxd.it/cuDjpD

Stop your screaming! Put down your pitchforks! Given half a chance, Frankenstein's misunderstood monster delights as a whisky-swilling, cigar-smoking bon vivant.

Monster-verse's wackiest & most tender-hearted nightmare.

#NowWatching THE HEIRESS (1949). Director: William Wyler. Olivia de Havilland, Montgomery Clift.

Nominated for 8 Oscars & winning de Havilland Best Actress, I love this tale of a rich spinster & the devilishly handsome suitor (Clift at his yummiest) who pursues her.

Madman, genius, or both? Oscar-winner Nicolas Cage celebrates birthday 1/7/64.

Fave Feud:
On uncle FFC's PEGGY SUE GOT MARRIED (86), Kathleen Turner loathed that his idiosyncratic character choices!

"Oh, that stupid voice of his & the fake teeth. Honestly, I cringe to think about it!"

My ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ review of FEARLESS boxd.it/cvqp2D

Should be discussed among Weir's best....more audacious & emotionally truthful than some bigger hits.

Bridges & Perez devastate, processing psychological trauma, self-imposed isolation & survivor's guilt after horrific plane crash. Powerful!

My ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 review of THE HEADLESS WOMAN boxd.it/cuR9l5

A slow simmer that might mystify action-seeking viewers. Study of uncertainty & guilt...quietly getting under your skin.

Does truth matter? Film's biggest reveal is that for some on socioeconomic spectrum, answer is "not so much."

My ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ review of THE EEL boxd.it/cubgLl

Is redemption possible when you've done the unthinkable?

Imamura's study of guilt & second chances is bookended by moments of extreme violence & incredible tenderness. A bit chaotic in last act, but fantastic lead performances never lose focus!

#NowWatching FEARLESS (1993). Director: Peter Weir. Jeff Bridges, Rosie Perez.

Weir's most underappreciated banger features Bridges & Perez both giving career-best performances as plane crash survivors. Really.

A show that started with promise & progressively got better year after year, THE AMERICANS went out firing on all cylinders. Finale was high-wire act of brilliant storytelling.

The fact that Keri Russell never won an Emmy is mind-boggling.

Be careful what you wish for! And don't count your chickens before they hatch!

Amusing beginning, but this Irish melodrama stalls out at midway point...then turns to abject misery. A lot as a cautionary tale. Too much, even.

My ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 review of THE LINE boxd.it/ct8N0H

Appropriately grim story of entitled assholes & the damage they inflict. Well-intentioned, believable, but rather one-dimensional, view of college fraternity experience.

Captures misery, but no one ever has fun in this "brotherhood" bonding.

#NowWatching THE HEADLESS WOMAN (2008). Director: Lucrecia Martel. Maria Onetto, Claudia Cantero.
