An explainer of the “transgender vs transgenic mice” issue, neither of which is correct:

No, President Trump, they’re not “transgender mice." (But they're not "transgenic" mice either, as some scientists claimed.)
Let's clear up all the confusion.

I’ve seen posts claiming Trump confused transgender & transgenic. There is no such thing as a “transgender mouse” but he wasn’t talking about transgenics, either. Misrepresenting what he meant without fact checking first threatens science credibility for other issues.

BREAKING: The USDA, under DOGE orders, has accidentally fired staff working to combat bird flu. It’s now trying to rehire them.

It follows the accidental firing of nuclear safety staff last Friday.

And the accidental firing of FAA’s experienced aviation safety staff.

Incompetence will be deadly.

Helpful explainer about why university endowments aren’t a substitute for indirect costs ⬇️☀️
1/ I am seeing a lot of comments on the slashing of NIH support along the lines of “universities should just spend their huge endowments.”

I’m the last person to cheer on the institutional stratification rising endowments have contributed to. But let me explain why this is not a solution.

So, the current plan is to slash everything and restore the parts that induce the most uproar? If that’s the game, it’s time to get loud about the things you care about most. If only there weren’t so many critical things at risk all at once. #StandUpForScience
