As a theoretical cosmologist, I'm frequently asked "what is the benefit of the work you're doing for people's lives?" Nothing I work on makes money or cures disease.
There are a few different answers one can give, at various levels of "convincing" / "actually relevant to why the work is done."

Gregory Washington, George Mason University’s first Black president, will not be apologizing over diversity initiatives he's pursued since his hiring in 2020. Washington's lawyer says the Trump administration conducted an incomplete and haphazard investigation full of "gross mischaracterizations."

I only took one picture at the NSF. The meetings were confidential and we took our work seriously. We approached our responsibility to evaluate taxpayer-funded work with both great care & excitement about the future. What if I told y’all that race is, in fact, not an immutable characteristic? It is a construct created to parce power, opportunity and economic advantage. A person racialized as Black might be 10% African or 100%, but regardless of genetics, they share a common history of exclusion.
