“Like gravity,” Dio murmured, eyeing her with interest. “As inexorable as the pull of the moon on the tide, or the stars on the planets.”

He eyes her for a moment, taking in leaf-green eyes and sapphire hair. Interesting. Very interesting.

“That is all. You may go.”
“It’s a strange thing,” Cordelia recalls with clarity. “A pull in the direction of Enya, to you. It felt natural and right, as though I’m meant to be here. I wish to understand why that’s the case.”

“Indeed.” Dio returns to the settee and lounges back. “I do wonder at what brought you into my service, however.”
She seemingly isn’t convinced, but she doesn’t press. Instead, Cordelia leans her elbow on the arm of her chair and sits her cheek on her fist.

“Perhaps,” she muses, changing her focus to a candle flame. “But as you said, agree to disagree.”
“Who can say?” Dio says airily. “But I think that is where we are going to have to disagree, for I believe that base desires—sentimentality, love, emotion—can be overcome by willpower.”

“Sentimentality, love, think of any emotion. Why do we have them?”

He laughs.

“Me. I am the predator, in case you have not noticed—but thankfully for you, I have not decided you are prey just yet.”

He turns and strolls away.

“Instinct can be overcome. Base desires can be stifled. The logical mind can rule.”
He’s been dominating this conversation, but she’s been listening intently, deliberating.

Dio tilts his head, considering. How curious. She is either very secure, or very stupid.

He answers her question with a question of his own.

“Does anyone have reason to be afraid of a predator?” he asks. “Why do we fear the tiger? The shark? The bear?”

Maybe he’ll play a little game—cat to mouse. He rises from the settee and comes to stand before her, towering. Imposing. Golden. He looks down at her with those luminous eyes.

“Are you frightened of me?” he asks. He knows the answer; let’s see if she can keep a straight face while saying ‘no.’
“If you insist.” Cordelia tests her boundaries further, taking a seat opposite of him.

Dull. Dry. Paltry, really—except for the last statement. That interests him. Dio’s eyes glint as he stares at her, reflecting light like some nocturnal creature’s. He sets aside his book.

“Oh?” His voice has taken on a sultry purr. She has caught the predator’s attention. “How curious. >>
“I’m rather poor at introductions,” she admits to him truthfully while she washes over her details. “But I’m Cordelia, as you know. I’m actually pursuing a doctorate in astrophysics, from Australia, and I am a very, 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 convincing liar.”

“Vanilla Ice.” Dio is eyeing himself in the mirror—or rather, the thick band of scar tissue that encircles his neck. “I assume you have news?”

“I am already bored, which is why I asked,” Dio said, finally sliding his gaze to look at her. “I know nothing of you, other than your stand ability. Do be a dear and fill in the gaps.”
“My apologies, then.”

But he had a point, she knew him from a distance. It was only appropriate for her to spin her own web in her favor.

“Then, forgive me. What do you know about me? I don’t want to bore you with trivial factoids.”
Dio does not blink as he watches the spider weave. The silk it spins is gossamer gold in the candle light; impossibly fine.

“You.” He doesn’t look at her. “Enya was responsible for hiring you—I know the basics, but I must confess my knowledge of you is very limited.”

“Of what, if I may ask?” Cordelia approaches tentatively, following the direction of his eyes. It was always hard to decipher him; a puzzle of ill-befitting shapes.
He’s lounging on a dusty old settee with a book in his lap—not that he’s paying attention to it. Instead, he watches a spider methodically spin its web by candlelight.

“I’m curious,” he says eventually.
