Assistant Professor at University of Utah in Educational Psychology’s Literacy, Language, and Learning program. I research and teach about facts, fads, and fallacies about defining and remediating word-level reading disabilities, like dyslexia.

Let’s acknowledge the truth. Those fighting to end DEI in schools are not worried about resegregating schools. Schools have always been segregated and inequitable based on zoning and funding. DEI initiatives are essential because opportunity is not provided equally in America. I hate people.

Idea for a survey study. Let’s see if I’m onto something. Reply in comments or DM if you work @ a reading clinic affiliated with a university. Do you use a commercially-available program. If yes: What program? Did you sign an agreement that you wouldn’t research the efficacy of the program?

An incredible chart from Mark Seidenberg & Devin Kearns on the "Challenges in Connecting Reading Science and Educational Practice," which, if I wrote this, would launch a thousand hot takes. Seems non-controversial to me?

Looking for rigorous research that is funded by a non-political federal agency created through bipartisan political consensus? Support the Institute of Education Sciences. Without IES, get ready for a lot more pseudoscience driving practices in U.S. schools. theconversation.com/helping-teac...
Helping teachers learn what works in the classroom − and what doesn’t − will get a lot harder without the Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences
The nonpartisan arm of the Education Department supports research and shares data on student progress. It identifies what works and what doesn’t.

Up to 169 IES contracts have been canceled, threatening critical education research. This is a major setback for educators & children with disabilities who rely on evidence-based practices. Urge Congress to protect IES research! #4SpecialEducation

#PCRC2025 poster presenters… just filled out my post conference survey & had an idea for posters. What if posters were grouped by category, selected when submitting a proposal. Each poster presenter gets 2 minutes to deliver an elevator pitch with 3 slides, then invite 2 questions from audience.
