I added a dog character to my novel-in-progress. And the dog now has the longest bio of all the characters in my separate “character notes” doc haha. 🐾

“Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism…”

If you’ve never read this 1946 article by George Orwell, and you get complaints you as a writer shouldn’t be “political”…

Why I Write | The Orwell Foundation
"What I have most wanted to do throughout the past ten years is to make political writing into an art. My starting point is always a feeling of partisanship, a sense of injustice."

Whenever a video starts with, “This is genius!”, I turn it off. I’ve reached my limit for being underwhelmed for the rest of my life.

I’ve done nothing today except pleasure read and fry apples in butter and brown sugar. Taking a real (AKA full) day off. 🙂

While doing my early morning walks the past two weeks, I listened to the tell-all audiobook of “Kitchen Confidential” by Anthony Bourdain. It was SO good narrated by him. Nvr read or heard it before. I miss his show and perspectives on people all over the 🌎.

Reading makes me braver as a writer—seeing to what extremes other writers have pushed envelopes, bucked systems, taken up space as they should have, and wrote knowing there would be consequences from so many that will always pick what is self-preserving over what’s true. #writingcommunity #amwriting

My TBR. And I’ll listen to “Gone Girl” while walking bc I’m curious to see how thrillers hv changed. 13 yrs since it pubbed and 20 yrs(!) since “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”, which for me was the first thriller in the “girl in the title” trend. Lisbeth Salander, is a MC I’ll nvr forget. #booksky

Never have I so extensively “told” a story to myself like I am with this current first draft. There’s going to be some serious editing needed in the “showing” department later. 🫠 🙈

Someone emailed me from an AOL account. I wondered if they were typing away from the underground bunker in “Lost.”

My husband and I are both sitting around reading. Books. Not phones. A perfect night. Tomorrow has enough worries of its own, and we’ll face them…tomorrow.

Took my Ukrainian Easter eggs out early. My mom got these every year she went to teach in #Ukraine. She has some at her house too.

“Told in a dual timeline, Doll Parts is an evocative and irresistible debut, at once an exploration of the dark chasms that break apart friendships, an ode to the aching beauty of girlhood, and a sharp portrayal of grief that can physically haunt you.”

Oooh {{shiver}} YES. 💗📚

May you have peace and security again as the sovereign nation you are. So much of the world stands with you. To my Seattle area Ukrainian friends especially, you aren’t alone.

What’s your method for making a note when you want to incorporate some detail later in a story but can’t right now? Do you put a note in the actual mss in a bright color, do you keep a list in a separate doc, do you jot a physical note down?

Most first chapters (fiction) seem to be around 2-7 pgs these days.

If you have one, what is your editor advising on first chapter length? Have any of you exceeded the current norm by quite a bit? And what genre do you write?

We each contribute in our own way. All efforts are worthy.

But sometimes we do need to abandon the work. To grieve. To recover. To regroup. To move to Canada. Or a different galaxy far far away.

Love it when helpful examples are provided about a writing concept. It’s one thing to teach theory; it’s another to demonstrate it well.

Are you aware of “sequential narration” in your storytelling? Or are you merely conveying a visual of your characters’ progress? Agent and teacher Don Maass recommends using “human moments” to convey progress, today at WU.

Our son called and said his L.A. rental house caught fire last night while everyone was out and it’s a total loss. Electrical failure. His little pet hamster died. I don’t even know what to say right now. It’s devastating he and his housemates made it through the LA fires, and then this happens. 😢
