Some reflections in the days after my latest post:

1) I understand the case for using averages. They are very simple. You count the amount of wealth, you count the number of people, you're done. But, also this simplicity is dangerous when we obviously know that there are so many ultra rich people.

I just published an essay on why “the average American” doesn’t actually exist—and how relying on averages distorts how we talk about the economy and make policy.
Would love thoughts, pushback, or examples I missed.

Working on an essay about why averages might be the worst way to talk about the economy.
If the mean is hopelessly distorted by billionaires… what should we be looking at instead?
Median? Percentiles? Something else entirely?

Nevertheless, the first post is about why I'm so tired about hearing about averages. Basically all of them. Average GDP per capita. Average net worth. Average savings. Average education level. blah blah blah.

I'll be using this account to talk through mostly political ideas, exploring things mostly from my burgeoning substack (how original). I don't think I'm coming from a fixed ideology, but I guess that's not really for me to decide.

I’ve just started my Bluesky account and my immediate reflection is I need more good solo photos. If you look closely, even my current photo has a baby sleeping on my chest.
