I dropped my first story on my Substack this week! It’s a heavy one, about grief, guilt, love, and the monsters they can make of us…

Hello Bsky! Long time no see, or read. I’ve been deep in the dungeon revising and querying my first novel as well as starting my second, but I’ve decided to start a Substack as a home for short form horror and fantasy.

My first story will be landing there some time this week!

To any wise published authors: is 100k words too many for a first-time authors horror novel? I’m seeing a lot of different opinions online and it’s starting to worry me as I put the finishing touches on. #HorrorWriting #Authors #HorrorAuthors

I’ve just noticed a massive influx of followers here on Bluesky. I don’t know what brought you to my page, but after being on a long hiatus and contending with a bout of stagnation, I’ve come back to both writing and social media at the same time you all arrive. I’ll call that serendipity
November 16, 2024 at 9:17 PM
Well, after all is said and done I only got 46k words this #NaNoWriMo. But I’d say that’s not too bad for a first time, we’ll get em next year. On the bright side, it’s helped me really refine my work ethic toward writing!

I would ask them how to really scare people. Like deeply. To their core. Horror that will stay with them when they’re done reading. And they would likely say: “Look around.”

Last question for tonight! What question would you most like to ask your muse? And would their answer likely be?

Oh man. This is a good one! They would look world-weary and sad and beautiful. And being around them would be uncomfortable and silent and force you to reflect on yourself. You would want to run from them, but you can’t bring yourself to do it.

Your muse materialises as a real person before your eyes. Describe them!

I guess I’m mostly a pantser but I guess with some plantser in me. I have the major plot points in my head when I start writing so I know where I’m trying to get to. But I like to discover the best path to the end as I go. I find often that characters want to grow beyond my plan.

#HorrorWritersChat
Where do you exist as a writer on the planner-pantser-plantser scale?

In One For The Road, there are 3 main POV characters. It was challenging to get their paths to all converge in a way that felt natural but I think I accomplished that. Now, I’m trying to fill in a couple blanks before the next plot point, while ratcheting up the tension.

Think about your current horror WIP / most recent release. What have you / did you find most challenging?

I love to write horror because I love to read horror. But on a deeper level, I think that horror is a necessary expression of our fears as a society. It helps us understand and come to terms with the universal fears we all share.

#HorrorWritersChat question 5:

Today is “I Love to Write Day”. Tell us why you love to write horror!
November 15, 2023 at 8:19 PM
My biggest influence as an author is cliche but honestly, Stephen King. I don’t think anyone infuses characters and world with so much reality. The X-Files really influenced my love for the supernatural as science. Alfred Hitchcocks approach to suspense is one of my commandments

#HorrorWritersChat question 4:

Tell us three horror writing inspirations - authors, books, movies, directors, video games
November 15, 2023 at 7:50 PM
I think I’d like to them to walk away seeing that there’s plenty of real horror around us in the world, a lot of it preventable. In my current book, there’s vampires, but a lot of the horror also comes from the awful way people on the street live and are treated.

#HorrorWritersChat
#HorrorWritersChat question 3: What one thing would you most like readers to take away from your horror work?
November 15, 2023 at 7:33 PM
Ben Reyes, the protagonist of my current WIP. He’s been homeless most of his life and by the start of the story his mom has disappeared. He’s clever, determined, and kind but fighting for survival has left him with a hard streak. He’s very wary of the world and so far it’s worked.

#HorrorWritersChat question 2:

20th November is World Children’s Day. Who is your favourite child character that you created? Tell us about them
November 15, 2023 at 7:21 PM
Hi everyone! I’m Christopher Sotelo. I write horror and dark fantasy and a bit of poetry. My current project is about a homeless teenager on the streets of LA who becomes entangled with an old vampire hunter and a coven of vampires operating a sinister flophouse on Skid Row.

#HorrorWritersChat
And away we go! #HorrorWritersChat Question 1:

Introduce yourself! Tell us who you are, what you write, and the project you’re currently working on.

catharsis

to write is to express
like an infected wound
the soul needs
to be bled
dont wait for it to flow
take up the scalpel
make the incision
watch how easily
it comes

stasis

its november in LA
but youd never know it.
the trees stand in defiance
to the calendar.
the only thing the breeze carries
is trash.
sun blasted sidewalks sprawl,
eternal.
but the birds hear an ageless song.
and it sounds like
winter.

#NaNoWriMo days 7-10: 7200 words written sporadically throughout the week but ultimately I’m still on target and barreling through the end of Act 1. Now the real vampire shenanigans are about to begin.
November 11, 2023 at 7:59 AM
I often scare myself a bit when writing the villain’s POV. Most recently, writing for vampires that view people purely as livestock and getting into that headspace of dehumanization has been disturbing.

#HorrorWritersChat question 4: Tell us about a time you scared yourself with your own writing project
