Break it, then privatize it. Building up private U.S. forecasting ability to current NWS levels after such a ruthless and foolish decimation of the NWS will take many years. Billions in costs will occur that would have been avoided had we kept the NWS intact, and many avoidable deaths will occur.
National Weather Service employees were encouraged to take early retirements at an all-hands meeting Thursday. The union believes as many as 1,000 could leave in the coming months - out of a workforce of just over 4,000.
