Step 1. Pause work briefly to make cup of tea

Step 2. Put nice hot cup of tea down down for a sec and do some more work. Completely forget tea exists.

Step 3. Re-discover cold cup of tea ~1 hour later.

My 9-year-old made up a story about a spy, who comes across as quite a suave and adventurous character. She also made up a name for it, which she swears she's never heard before and has made up. The spy is called Clive Anderson 🤣

A recent article claimed that the Science of Learning and Direct Instruction is "neoliberal ‘dogma’ that is working to de-skill the teaching profession". This is my response to that ⬇️ carlhendrick.substack.com/p/defending-...

There are a few versions online of Janis Joplin singing Piece of My Heart, but this version in this key has to be one of the best vocal performances of anyone, ever:

You know that feeling when you've finally done the big shop and schlepped it home, but then realised you've got to put it all away? Getting a big furniture delivery arrive after several days (yay!) and then realising you've got to assemble it all (boo!) is an even purer form of that.

Posts on BlueSky are Tweets, in the same way that 'hoover' is a verb now divorced from the brand Hoover. You don't dyson the living room (unless you're an absolute weapon), you hoover it, even if you're using a Dyson.
Stop saying skeets.

Very wise thread. High outcomes, learning loads, but making space for lots of fun, laughter and joy. That's a school.
🧵An important part of the primary experience is having a lovely time- adults ringfencing the unique state of childhood and ensuring that primary is a glorious place to be little. Playful and joyful are not the antonyms of high standards and aspiration.

A good way of really coming face-to-face with the impact of the post-2015 curriculum is realising your 10-year-old year 5 child is more immediately and naturally fluent with grammar terminology than you, a 37-year-old former English teacher.

Lots of 'read more books' resolutions on here, and I'd like to get back to always having a book on the go, rather than defaulting to scrolling.

Another one for me is listen to more albums. That was the default mode of listening for me before MP3 players and Spotify playlists.

Watching series 2 of Wolf Hall (binged series 1 last week). Two thoughts
- It's good!
- I like the capes the men all swan around in. Bring them back.

Misconceptions about Rosenshine 80% principle that I see quite often:
1) we need to get hung up on the exact '80%' ratio. We don't. It's a metaphor really for 'most but not all kids'
2) that it's about teaching well enough that most kids grasp content. It's not really. It's about curriculum (1/2..)

Smartphones and apps specifically engineered to weaponise our hunger for micro-hits of dopamine are SO antithetical to what childhood should be.

There's already a contrian "smartphones can be good for kids, actually" movement I've seen on BlueSky. Hmm.

This three-week experiment to study the horrifying effects of the grim content that children can access 24/7 has predictable results – which are nonetheless horrifying

I’ve been running online CPD since the pandemic. It emerged from nowhere, but saved me from the isolation and overwhelming fear which came with having a newborn baby during an international crisis and not being able to see my mum.
