In the chemists (pharmacy) and someone ahead of me just gave the name Snake Plissken. Can you give fictional names for prescriptions?? He had no eye patch, but he did look like he might have recently escaped New York.

Alt: a man is walking through a chain link fence in a prison. It’s Snake Plissken!

2026 watch #17 - Anemone (2025). Daniel Day-Lewis comes out of retirement to make this slow two-hander with his son Ronan as writer/director. DDL monologues a couple times, other than that the score does some heavy lifting. Nice camerawork needed a better story as a calling card for junior. #filmsky

Be news if he arrived in Davos *behind* his speech...

2026 watch #16 - High Ground (2025). Bog standard small town sheriff vs bad guys, except this one has a real Americans-loaded-for-bear-with-God-on-their-side vibe that makes the whole film feel off. Lead struggles to carry the film but the boss level bad guy has fun in his role. ⭐️⭐️ #filmsky

2026 watch #15 - Highest 2 Lowest (2025). “What would you do, James?” Just learned it’s a remake of Kurosawa’s High and Low. Hope that film works better than Lee’s because I found it hard to come to terms with the clunky dialogue & Tyler Perry-esque score. Good performances were a given. #filmsky

2026 watch #14 - The Integrity of Joseph Chambers (2022). “Oh, you’re an idiot.” A character study of a man trying to prove himself a man by taking up arms against deer... It’s a small film helped immensely by the soundtrack and Crawford’s strong performance. #filmsky

2026 watch #13 - A Bittersweet Life (2005). Lee Byung-hun stars as a cool as a cucumber underling to a crime boss, who makes the age old mistake of falling for his boss’ girl. It’s like watching a Wong Kar-wai film dipped in ultra violence. Very enjoyable. #filmsky

2026 watch #12 - The Shawshank Redemption. Seven Oscar nominations, zero wins. Shows what they know. A near faultless film with a fine script, a fabulous score, and perfect casting. Morgan Freeman’s voiceover pours on the poetry like honey on pancakes, it remains a real five star classic. #filmsky

2025 watch #11 - I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not (2025). A sympathetic look at one of Hollywood’s reportedly most difficult comics to work with. I’ll always be a fan, and I’ve often suspected you need to be on his clown wavelength or at least know there’s a wavelength to be on, to get along. #filmsky

2025 watch #10 - Black Phone 2: the Freddy Krueger Years (2025). It has it's moments, and love the use of 8mm and the soundscape to differentiate between the real world and the dream world. But it pales in comparison to the first imho. Simply put, not enough Ethan Hawke. #filmsky

2025 watch #9 - The Silence of the Lambs. Best Picture winner at the 64th Oscars & remains to this day the only horror to win the award. (Sinners this year?)
It’s a masterful suspense film, perfectly cast, great score. I don’t think it’s perfect, but perfect in 1991 with a cinema audience. #filmsky

Inside on the PS5 is a cute-horrific indie game.

2025 watch #8 - The Piano Accident (2025). Adele Exarchopolous is almost unrecognisable as Magalie, a “Jackass” sociopath who feels no pain. Quentin Dupieux’s latest absurd comedy, a commentary on social media, influencers, includes the portrayal of not one good person, for good measure! #filmsky

2025 watch #7 - Big Wednesday (1978). A coming-of-age story about three friends and their love of the ocean, and life getting in the way. It’s The Deer Hunter on the west coast, no less endearing a friendship, but more shallow and a fun in the sun vibe. Windows were certainly made of lesser stuff!

2025 watch #6 - Platoon (1986). Oliver Stone’s Oscar winner that started a spate of Vietnam war films in the late 80’s and early 90’s. A who’s who of actors that became Hollywood A-listers, which is something of a distraction now, but this is still one of the best of the genre. #filmsky

2025 watch #5 - Train Dreams (2025). A poignant tale of humanity as it winds through the years, together and alone. As much as I like Will Patton, not sure I needed the voice-over. Maybe it’s required to get the Netflix gen to look up from their phones for slow moving stories like this. #filmsky
January 8, 2026 at 1:09 PM
2025 watch #4 - Serpent’s Path (1998). Remade last year by the same director, this is the most straightforward Kiyoshi Kurosawa I’ve seen to date. Desperate to avenge his murdered daughter, a man enlists the help of a cool calculating mathematician who seemingly has all the answers. #filmsky

2025 watch #3 - Léon (1994). Technically superb & fantastic performances, especially from a young Natalie Portman. Trying, however, to separate the artist Luc Besson from a film with this storyline, having just learned that he was dating a 15-yr-old at the time, is nigh on impossible. #filmsky

2025 watch #2 - Cloud (2024). Became a fan of Kiyoshi Kurosawa last year after watching Cure and Charisma. Cloud starts strong, about a robotic man scamming people, and the friends he doesn’t make along the way. Ends in a Freefire-like shoot out, with the joy sucked out of it. Not his best. #filmsky

2025 watch #1 - Passport to Pimlico (1949). In the London rubble, Ealing Studios make a superb absurdist comedy. One of their best, and apparently it was to be the plot of Wayne’s World 2 at one point.

Spoorloos (1988) - aka The Vanishing - is showing at the Prince Charles Cinema tonight. I can’t go but pretty sure I wrote it on their suggestion board some time in 2025. #filmsky

9 years, what a ride! Not all shows know how or when to finish, but #StrangerThings totally nailed the ending.
