When she steps out of the bathroom it is to the sight of Vi holding a pair of small scissors and staring quite intensely at what looks like a cotton pad in her hands. That isn’t strange in and of itself, Vi being still rather than in motion, but it is certainly rare. The frown too, on Vi’s brow. That she hasn’t seen since well, since they’d last missed that caravan out in that jaunt to Freljord two years ago. Or maybe since the last time Vi tried to learn to make a brand new noodle without consulting the chef. It’s endearing. She clears her throat lightly. Sure enough, Vi’s eyes light up as she turns, holding the cotton pad up. “Oh great,” says Vi. “Don’t move. I need to—” Cait raises her eyebrows now that she’s figured out exactly what it is that had Vi stumped. “Don’t say it,” Vi grumbles, shuffling closer to get a better estimate of the size. “I know, I know I should know but I just- I want to be extra sure.” Cait smiles watching Vi make short work of the cotton pad, then another, to get it the right size. It’s She steps closer, feeling the cool air on her skin. She leans over and sees the tape with the corners already rounded, the two cotton circles suddenly making everything feel a lot more real, like this is actually happening. “You’ve viewed the diagrams?” She nods, fingers trailing gently over the soft material, envisioning how it’ll go on her skin, how she’s to—. “Hey—” Vi’s hand closes over hers “—we’re just trying this.” She nods. “It’s easy to take off, a little oil, a little waiting, voila.” She nods again. Vi squeezes her hand gently. “It’s going to be alright.” Caitlyn chuckles. It never ceases to awe her just how well Vi knows her, just how well Vi can read her, just how much Vi cares. “That’s not what I’m worried about,” she says. “I know,” says Vi. Caitlyn’s smile wobbles. She can feel it wobbling. She can feel her breath tremble in the air of her bedroom. “It’s going to be alright no matter what happens,” Vi says. No matter what happens. “You’re going to be ok,” says Vi. “We’re just going to learn a few things about you. That’s all. No pressure. No expectations. No matter what it is we learn. It’s going to be ok.” It feels a little insane. She knows logically that it will be ok. She knows that she is not the first to try this, not the first in her family, not even the first in her marriage. She knows that this will change nothing between them, knows that this will change very little of how Vi sees her, knows that this is a thing people do. But knowing that people do this is different from doing it herself. It’s different. It’s scary. What if she likes it? What if she likes it? What if she likes it so much that life becomes unbearable without it? What if she likes it so much that when she looks into the mirror she’ll never want to see anything else ever again? What if— Vi’s hand wraps gently up, curves around the warmth of her cheek, cups the soft parts of her soul, pulls her down into a kiss that is slow and devastatingly tender. Caitlyn sinks into it, sinks straight into the deep end, lets Vi be the one to hold her close and hold her gentle. “Cait,” says Vi, lips a hair’s breadth from her own, words whispered in the space between them. “Take the leap.” Caitlyn swallows. “I’ll catch you wherever you land.”

There's an old record spinning in the background, an almost distant hum; not quite from the next room but perhaps from the parlor beyond, given how faint it is. It's a tune she doesn't quite recognize which means this disc was probably found by Vi. A soft pant. Caitlyn's hands pause in their writing and almost instantly there's the quietest hint of a whine hastily gulped down the back of Vi's throat. “Darling,” she says. “You know there's no shame in asking for what you want.” Vi's glare is baleful but there is no anger behind it, more of a pout than a scowl, more of a plea than a threat. “m'fine,” Vi mutters. “You said you had work.” Caitlyn doesn't jostle her. That would be immature and spiteful and she is neither of those things, the love of her life sunk deep on her cock, doing her very best to pretend this is all she wants and that she wouldn't rather Caitlyn be fucking her senseless right now. So Caitlyn hums instead and continues working on the report. It is, admittedly, rather distracting because Vi is soft and warm, so goddamn hot and wet and perfectly tight, clenching on the hexstrap like she thinks Caitlyn won't notice. Caitlyn does. Of course she does. But she's had practice; frankly, she's no less stubborn and perhaps hates losing even more than her beautiful wife. “I did,” she says after a while, pen stopping again. Vi's eyes light up at the usage of past tense. Caitlyn can feel the squirm of disappointment when she reaches for the next sheet, as the candle begins to burn lower. Good.
