The National Weather Service says high heat and humidity will settle over the area Wednesday, Thursday and possibly Friday, pushing the heat index to 115 degrees. Residents should take health precautions. The city will open cooling centers.

Heat and humidity will begin to build from the west on Tuesday, with dangerous heat expected Wednesday through Thursday. While thunderstorms are expected to bring relief from the heat by late Friday, a slower arrival will mean continued heat into Friday.

A line of storms is expected to track across the north half of IL late this morning into the afternoon. This line of storms may be in a weakening trend through mid-morning, but begin to re-intensify late this morning. Damaging winds and torrential rainfall will be the main risk.

Cooling Centers are open if you need to cool off. In response to this weekend's heat wave, the Garfield Community Service Center at 10 S. Kedzie will open as Cooling Center from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
