Let’s have a go at a new paradigm for news and see how it goes:
Sound recordist / camera operator

Because arguably the sound of the message is MORE important than the visual in a news setting.

They skimp out by hiring a single lighting camera person who has sound kit.
Unfortunately that makes sound an afterthought, as that lighting camera person is focussed on their main job, which is lighting and cameras (and often more than one camera).

So disappointing when BBC News bits have significant, central VT pieces with absolutely shockingly bad sound.

It’s not surprising however; because the BBC neither employs in-house sound specialists nor pays appropriate rates for experienced freelance ones.

Recording dialogue, triggering audio samples and sound effects, while mixing to speakers in four independent zones, and creating a usable edit mix track on a one shot, “as-live”, 20-ish minute, video game promotional tie-in, horror experience with an expensive talent. Easy 😅
