I’m in a casino, this is not my natural habitat so the off spring are off losing money and I’m drinking coffee.

Interesting people watching place though, seeing the people who are on the up and those on the down.

Sitting at the airport in some ridiculously expensive parking waiting for the daughter. There comes a point in your life when you expect not to be waiting to pick up your children. It’s not happened yet.

Turned off the sat nav and just turned as the mood took me and ended up here. It’s right in the middle of a housing estate. You’d never guess.

I’m a bit sight seeing done for now and I want a decent night’s sleep where I don’t have have wonder which door is the bathroom. Last night had the added complication of no working bathroom light to throw in the mix.

My solo week of driving has been around 900 miles in total. A whole lot of ground covered from lunch in Wollongong to sunset in St Kilda and many places in between. It’s been a fantastic and memorable journey.
Amazing stack of avocado and smoked salmon with a mango salsa and wasabi mayonnaise. Served in a tiny cafe near the Win stadium called Bucks. The wasabi made my eyes water and Wollongong certainly packed a punch. Looking out to sea near the St Kilda Cenotaph watching the sunset. The sky greys, pinks, yellow, orange and blue streaks. A lone kite surfer’s kite visible in the failing light. A beautiful metaphor for all of the fun, interest and excitement and colours of a week spent alone. I hadn’t realised quite how much I need solitude in a life that is full of people and competing demands.

Unfortunately the necessary glass of wine will be in a tumbler because I do not have either a tall person or a ladder with me.
A small hand on a short person reaches in vain for a wine glass on the top shelf of the kitchen cupboard. Being resourceful I’ll be able to use either a tumbler or a mug (I’m very classy). In the meantime I’m having a mug of tea because I could manage that unassisted.

Final solo night in St Kilda and the first almost busy sort of place I’ve been in since last Saturday. Apartment comes with a tiny parking space next a fence that you have to reverse up an alley to get to. It tested my skills but the car is parked.

First stop of the day for sustenance. If only you could smell the banana bread
A slice of toasted and buttered banana bread cut into two slices on a white plate. If you wanted heaven in your mouth, this might be it. A decaf, skinny cappuccino in a mug with foamy milking rising way above the rim of the mug. They do seem to like a soufflé style coffee in Aus.

I’ve discovered the bed has an electric blanket. My feet are freezing so this has come as a proper treat. Cold feet = no sleep

There are no street lights in Walhalla so it’s completely dark, I’m a bit scared to go and sit outside and enjoy it in case some Australian nasty gets me!

The Post and telegraph office in the township colours of yellow and dried blood red. It’s L shaped and has a tin roof, single storey with a canopy over the entrance The corner stores hosts four or five little shops and although I missed it, if you walk though the shop as if you are going somewhere you shouldn’t it leads you to a small museum. Another thing I managed to miss during my visit. Typical of Australian main roads the shops have a covered walkway over the doors This is just a tin hut high on a hill, but if you zoom in to the left there’s a creepy as fuck man (a dummy and definitely not a ghost) looking out of the window Another of the original houses, just glorious in its overgrown garden, it’s actually up for sale. I won’t be putting in an offer, although it would mean I’d get to go on the steam train and visit the gold mine that I’ve missed today

Wandering around Walhalla. It’s a remote old place for sure.

It’s next to the OddFellows Hall which had been a chapel before it became a Masonic lodge building. It is made of brick, single story with a central door and a window either side. Liam Neeson was here for the making of a movie where the Star Hotel doubled as Nepal. The central bandstand in the town which for some reason was put on very high stilts. It’s cream with dark red trim and hosted the Mountaineer Brass Band. Subsequently it has been used for many other entertainment functions including weddings Next to the fire station is a very precarious looking wooden outside loo. It almost looks like it is about to slip into the river below. 1/10 for usability these days The original Walhalla fire station in the same yellow/cream and dark red colouring that is typical in the townships. It straddles a river because there wasn’t any flat land, not as I assumed so that they had easy access to water. Although I’m sure that must have been a consideration.

In a spectacularly poor bit of planning I arrived in a place with just 12 residences in time to say good-bye to the few people who work here. Got distracted and missed the train & gold mine tour. Neither of which I can do before I move on tomorrow. It is however a beautiful place.
My home for the night is a cottage next to the original school. It’s a grey single storey structure with a covered veranda. It has two windows one either side of the door which are not semetrical which is slightly annoying. I would say it’s built in the style of rather than actually old but the decor is very much my Nan when I was a child. It has everything except WiFi. It does have DVDs for me to watch, although I might give that a miss. Despite former mishaps with not having food for an evening meal, I was prepared for that and have coq au vin, mash and asparagus to eat. It would probably feed all 12 residents comfortably. Warm wine to go with it. What’s not to love?

My clothes are clean and dry. I’ve washed most of the egg off my t shirt and I’m now heading for a gold mine. It’s been a mixed day.

Age brings with it certain benefits, one is that you don’t mind going into a laundrette and asking if you can go out back and change your clothes so the ones you are wearing can be washed. Like a poor man’s Diet Coke advert.

I’ve been in the shower and washed my hair. Completely forgot to bring in a hair brush so I’m going to have to leave looking like I’ve been through a terrible experience.
