Let's talk morphology. How does your language combine words, roots and affixes to form new words with a more complex meaning?

We've seen the general strategy your language employs and how it conceives of time and nouns' roles in a phrase, but let's see the specifics.

Are there compound words? How are they formed? Are there derivational affixes, like English '-ness'? Mention them! Do nouns, verbs or adjectives inflect for things like case, number, tense or grammatical gender? What specific affixes or other mutations are used? Show us inflection tables if you got 'em!

If your language is fully isolating, I guess talk about what your language does instead!

Tense is rather simple: past, present, and future. I don’t tend to focus much on aspect, but I do have a couple individual categories like the continuative (jerkuimmijar “I’m still eating”) and terminative (jerkuippai “I finished eating”)

How does your language conceive of time? What tenses and aspects does your language distinguish?

Tenses refer to when an action happens. Past, present, future, timeless? Does your language always mark tense, or sometimes leave it implied? Does it distinguish recent and remote past or future?

Aspects refer to the extent of time over which an action happens, or to the particular part of the action being discussed. Momentary, habitual, ongoing, starting, ending?

Day 11: Alignment

Raikkun actually has a system of split-ergativity based on animacy/agency.

Sentences like “the dog saw leaves on the ground” would have a nom/acc agreement, but “the dog saw me with my son” would have erg/abs agreement.

Let's discuss morphosyntactic alignment. How does your language treat the agent (A) and patient (P) of a transitive verb compared to the sole argument (S) of an intransitive verb?

With nominative–accusative alignment, A and S are treated the same way (the nominative case), while P is treated differently (the accusative case). E.g. in English, we use 'he' in both "he laughed" (S) and "he saw the girl" (A), but 'him' in "the girl saw him" (P).

With ergative–absolutive alignment, P and S are treated the same way (the absolutive case), while A is treated differently (the ergative case).

These are the most common alignments, but there are a few other possibilities, and it's also possible to mix and match.

If you want to go further, what noun cases does your language's grammar distinguish (whether or not they mark it using inflection)?

Day 10: synthesis

Raikkun is highly synthetic, with nearly entire sentences being fused onto verbs especially. Though, it is still fairly agglutinative.

Example: “jermippaattui” meaning “I heard an animal”

jer- [1SG.SUBJ] + mi(t) [3SG.ANIM.OBJ] + -paattu- [heard] + -(i)i [PST]

Day 9: allophones

Yes, actually! Mainly in the vowels, though.

In Raikkun, it’s all depending on the uvular consonants following a vowel.

- [ɐ aː] become [ɑ ɑː]
- [ɪ iː] become [ɛ ɛː], and [ɪ] becomes [i] before [j]
- [u uː] become [ɔ ɔː]
