Just to reiterate the unfathomably huge stakes here: bird flu has the potential to kill millions and millions. It has done so before.

Vaccines are the best defense we have, and this administration just unilaterally decided, nope. 🧪
22 years ago I pivoted from working on antibiotic resistance to pandemic viruses.

Since then, I've argued that if we care about saving US lives in expectation, advance capacity for producing bird flu vaccine offers by far the greatest expected return on investment.

...

We were so goddamn close.
Trump administration cancels plans to develop a bird flu vaccine
The Department of Health and Human Services is ending a $766 million contract with the vaccine company Moderna to develop an mRNA vaccine for flu strains with pandemic potential, including bird flu.

A huge step from HHS that is at odds with science showing significant risks for young children and pregnant women — and that directly contradicts *the FDA's own publication* from last week listing pregnancy as a high-risk condition that would qualify people for this fall's Covid vaccine

"Women are PIs on 58% of the canceled grants, although they are PIs on only 34% of all active NSF grants.

Similarly, Blacks are PIs on 17% of the terminated grants, although they make only 4% of the total pool. Hispanic PIs and those with disabilities were twice as likely to lose a grant."
Another scoop from Jeff Mervis (@policyhound.bsky.social): NSF's ~1400 grant terminations have disproportionately affected PIs from groups underrepresented in science: women, racial & ethnic minorities, & those with disabilities. 1/3

I remember this photo of David Souter, as he drove home after the Bush v. Gore ruling. It is as if he saw the future unfold. Rest in peace.

Why is Bhattacharya scared to speak to @nature.com?
For the record, I've been trying to interview Bhattacharya since the moment (and before!) he was sworn in. I've followed up repeatedly. I offered to speak specifically about the new policy.

I've written 20 stories on NIH since the inauguration.

Why is Bhattacharya scared to speak to @nature.com?

Feeling the moral panic.
Fearing that Meta’s chatbots were too boring, Mark Zuckerberg ordered they be given more human-like traits. That rebuke led to a loosening of boundaries -- and the launch of digital companions that Meta knew could produce sex role-play content for children.

Meta’s ‘Digital Companions’ Will Talk Sex With Users—Even Children
Chatbots on Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp are empowered to engage in ‘romantic role-play’ that can turn explicit. Some people inside the company are concerned.

Make Washington the 11th Province!
I was very happy to welcome Consul General of Canada Craig Weichel to renew the important relationship between Washington and Canada. Both of us recognize, as neighbors and allies, cooperation and constructive dialogue has made for prosperity and safety on both sides of our shared border.

Lithuanians pay tribute to four U.S. soldiers who perished during a NATO training exercise.
As the Lithuanian people show the utmost respect for fallen US soldiers, Trump’s only engagement with them this week has been to impose a 20% tariff on the country.

Shaming.

Today is bull kelp day!!
Bull kelp forests are now the official marine forest of Washington, thanks in part to the hard work of Sebastian, a Bainbridge High School student. We can all make a difference, no matter our age.

In 15 yrs of reporting, I've never had so many health & biomed researchers & outreach orgs tell me they're afraid to talk w/press or barred from speaking bc of new comms policies.

I understand the fear of losing funds. I don't know if silence does more harm than good. If you can speak up, pls do.
