Philadelphia Flyers beat writer/podcaster for PHLY Sports.
There's rightfully been lots of chatter about the possibility of a Trevor Zegras extension after his stellar start to the year.

But is signing him this soon the right call? What might he cost now, & how high could the price go if they wait? My breakdown:

I'm not super mad about the game, because I do think GB is a legitimately good team & winning a game at Lambeau is tough. But man, the Eagles are just leaving so much meat on the bone. And it's now far enough into the season that it seems like this is just kinda how it's gonna be.

It's somehow underrated just how ridiculously good this era of Eagles defense is at tackling.

Just give your really good players a chance to make really good plays

This is a game of two really talented teams with two really bad gameplans/play callers/decision makers.

3rd-and-12 run in a scoreless game when you have AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith and are already in FG range is flat-out garbanzo beans.

How can an offensive coordinator be this cowardly with the weapons he has on hand? It's mindboggling.

This past weekend was my final breaking point with what Flyers Twitter has become. And they weren't even mad at me! (Mostly.)

It just cemented that rationality has completely gone out the window in that space. I still have to post there, but the people running Flyers Twitter now are just nuts.
I’m so glad I spent my weekend outside touching grass and not losing my mind over a hockey team lmao

Tocchet says the absences of York, Drysdale and Dvorak today from practice was mostly maintenance. Drysdale is a little under the weather, and York and Dvorak are banged up a bit. He's hoping that 48 hours off (there's no practice tomorrow) will help in that regard.

No Cam York, Jamie Drysdale and Christian Dvorak today at practice.

A lot to break down from today's Flyers' game, which means a beefy 10 Observations column.

- Michkov trending upwards
- Why he isn't getting more ice time
- Deep dive on Zegras' line change attempt on the GWG
- A defense of Ersson
- Grundström's debut

10 observations: A tale of two halves as Flyers start slow, storm back, then fall in OT to Senators - PHLY Sports
The Flyers fell behind 2-0, stormed back, only to fall in OT to the Senators. On Matvei Michkov's big goal, his still-low ice time, and what happened on the GW tally.

I mean, I'd like to see more shots, sure. But when you hold the other team to 13... yeah, a 22 - 13 shot differential is a winning differential.
22 sog isn't going to cut it..
Back to the shots and rebounds theme..
Shoot! Shoot! Shoot!
I feel like they're often more worried about turning it over than getting a rebound.

Btw, Zegras spent a LONG time at his stall in the locker room with his skates still on just sitting there and thinking, even after the media came in for availability. Never say he doesn't care about wins/losses. The way that game ended clearly affected him.
November 8, 2025 at 10:47 PM
Asked Tocchet about the GWG, and Zegras' attempted line change. What happened there?

"Well, he's got to then come to the bench hard. He was kinda waving that he wanted to come off, but he wasn't... you've got to be decisive. He wasn't decisive."
November 8, 2025 at 10:41 PM
Sens win it in OT, Stutzle with the goal off the transition rush, Zegras was a little late covering his man. 3-2 final score.

This is the sixth Flyers game this season to go to overtime out of 15 games. They're on pace for 33 OT contests.

Ottawa FINALLY gets a shot on goal. It had been over a period in between shots for them. Flyers put on a forechecking and defensive clinic from the late second period through the third.
November 8, 2025 at 8:33 PM
This game has been as close as Michkov has looked to peak rookie year Michkov this season. He's moving really well and playing with his signature assertiveness. Sure he wishes he could take back the penalty, but it came from a place of aggressiveness.
November 8, 2025 at 8:21 PM
And the Flyers aren't letting off the gas pedal. Both York and Brink nearly scored on this shift. The tentative, slow team from the first period is gone.
November 8, 2025 at 8:17 PM
And the Flyers tie it! Jamie Drysdale pounces on a loose puck off a Zegras rebound and rips it past a flailing Ullmark. That one felt inevitable -- the Flyers have been buzzing all period long and threatening.
November 8, 2025 at 8:15 PM
Giroux goes after Konecny in the corner after that play, and they were both smirking in the midst of the scrum. Just two shit talkers playing their games.
November 8, 2025 at 8:13 PM
Flyers buzzing in the offensive zone... and then Michkov takes a tripping penalty trying to reach for the puck.
November 8, 2025 at 8:00 PM
2-1 after 40 minutes. Flyers still down, but they've woken up in the wake of the Michkov goal, which was a fantastic individual effort. If they play like this in the third, Ottawa is going to have a hell of a time closing this game out.
November 8, 2025 at 7:39 PM
Flyers look like a totally different team after the Michkov goal. Swarming, attacking, forechecking. Ottawa clearly on their heels.
