PORTRAITS OF DECAY is out NOW! I couldn’t be prouder of this book—the short story is such a fundamental part of the horror genre, it feels especially exciting to see my work collected.

To kick off PORTRAITS’ birth, I wanted to talk about some of the works that served as its inspiration.

'The Rule of Jenny Pen' is a very very good film. Weird, unsettling, brilliantly acted and stylised to enhance the plot (rather than distracting from it). Highly recommend.

Any horror short story writers out there looking to swap critiques/feedback on works in progress? I've got a new one I'd appreciate a view on and happy to return the favour.

I wrote this story because I find the introductions to many horror anthologies/collections slightly irritating. This was my revenge!

Big thanks to Cosmic Horror Monthly for backing it.

I'm going to buy this. In my opinion, Gemma Files is the best writer of modern horror short stories. Not one of the best. The best.
I've been reading - A Primer to Gemma Files by @gemmafiles.bsky.social edited @ericjguignard.bsky.social @darkmoonbooks.bsky.social - and its sooooo good. I love that these dark tales come with commentary and a superb intro, interview and bio of the author too. I'll post a review when I'm finished!

A rave review of @datlow.bsky.social 's anthology.

This, from 'A Head Full of Horror' made my day: "The Motley, by Charlie Hughes... reminded me how rare it is to see an original creature in horror fiction that is profoundly scary."
