For the past year I have been working on a new tool that can be utilized for power injection screening for new wind/solar/BESS projects on the Irish transmission system. So far it has many different uses and I plan on continuing to improve it. See a summary here:

Stability and reliability have been on my mind lately, wind and solar are the primary solution to decarbonization but should not bear the blame of reduced short circuit values when STATCOMs, sync comps, and energy storage systems can be deployed in parallel. #GridMod

There are loads of options for budget hawks to support electric decarbonization. The PTC/ITC is a free market based approach that boosts wind and solar projects and was implemented in a technology agnostic manner. Carbon tax and dividend is another tool.

During an energy emergency the house BBB cuts rooftop solar and PTC/ITC for variable and firm renewable energy projects. Hoping that the senate will remove the 60 day construction deadline. A gift to the gas industry.

More data like this focused on nodes and branches would greatly benefit the industry:

The latest CRU decision on LEU connection policy marks a substantial change in what is expected from #Eirgrid regarding public data and analysis of network capacity. I hope they take every opportunity to do accomplish this in a way that prioritizes renewable development. 🔌💡

One of the many laid off is a brilliant friend who spent 3yrs getting an MBA-MEM and a year of job hunting to finally land a dream job at DOE’s Loan Programs Office, for which they relocated to DC — only to be kicked to the curb a few months later.

The LPO under the DOE is under no obligation to make money as it sought to ease the growing pains of the ongoing energy transition, but it DID ANYWAY.

Raise your hand and make more noise about wanting solar in your district. Steve Daines can't be the only one that's able to change the mind of this admin.

Project 2025 must have produced a copy with pictures with how closely trump is following it.

Reading "How to be a Climate Optimist" by @theturner.bsky.social has me thinking about the carbon tax and dividend. It faces a dim future in this admin, but would pair nicely with two things that Trump/Vance like. Sending consumers dividend payments and universal tariffs to offset the carbon price.

Per the latest EIA data up to October 2024 for the USA. Wind and Solar net electric generation as a percentage of total electric sales all sectors:

16.28% in 2022
17.04% in 2023
19.13% in 2024

Per the latest Eirgrid system and renewable data for IE. Wind+Solar generation as a percentage of demand:

34.40% in 2022
36.21% in 2023
34.96% in 2024

Old news to some, but a reminder of the urgency that is needed in order to out pace demand

Halting all onshore & offshore wind permits is deeply irrational and counterproductive, especially during a purported "energy crisis." It's not pro-abundance or even wholly anti-renewable, but rather personal technology tribalism elevated to presidential decree. 🔌💡

*flawed metric warning* Trump's latest anti-wind tweet fueled me to look back at the EIA yearly capacity data. Electricity prices are multi-faceted, but as I have pointed out in past op-eds wind and solar are cheap and don't deserve full blame for our need of new transmission. #energysky

While good news, name of the game will be out-pacing demand, important to fast track more wind and solar and see constraint as a feature, not a bug.
Good news to kick off 2025: 2024 was the year with the most renewable electricity ever generated on the island of Ireland!

The era of 🇮🇪 coal power also ended quietly during December and we have a new top 5 wind county: Offaly. More in our monthly recap: currents.greencollective.io/irish-grid-m...

It's important to decouple offshore wind energy from the UK windfall tax levy and instead make the key association of shielding consumers from unforseen spikes in energy costs. Another example of Trump being against a populist policy.
January 5, 2025 at 7:48 PM
I think about that landman scene too often. Is it worth it to explain the full depth of cradle to grave emissions of wind/solar compared to gas/coal? Probably, but doing so in a quick digestible way is often more important than a full essay #ifitookmyownadvice
