Divine Rites, Chapter 0: Prologue

Panel 1 Art: A landscape of a forest, in the center one tree towers over the others. Panel 1 Text: This land was blessed with magic by the god Kairos. A god who still lives. Panel 2 Art: A rope is tied to the branch of a tree Panel 2 Text: Using the magic of a foreign god was considered blasphemy. Panel 3 Art: A person wearing a white robe has pulled a lever, the rope is pulled taught downwards. The robed figure casts a spell using the symbol of Kairos. Panel 3 Text: It was Kairos' decree that heretics must be punished if the kingdom wished to prosper. Panel 4 Art: The hands of a figure dressed in gray are bound by rope. The hands are tattooed with small rune-like symbols. Panel 4 Text: The templars claimed that only those who used magic would be prosecuted. But was he even guilty of using magic? Or was he simply gifted magic by the wrong god? Panel 1: A man with long black hair stares toward the sky, his hands cupped in front of him. Magic in the form of light, like embers from a fire, fall in the air around him. A man and woman pass behind him. The woman whispers, 'The prince looks disgraceful.' The man responds 'Leave the boy alone.' Narration: The memory of that day is hazy... Panel 2-1: The prince's open hand shows a faintly glowing ember of magic resting in his palm. Narration: I thought the raw magic would burn me as though it were a piece of ember. Panel 2-2: He closes his hand into a loose fist. Narration: It was scarcely warm. Panel 2-3: The prince places his hands against his chest. A tear falls down his cheek. Panel 1: Another man approaches the prince from behind. Narration: But I do remember that strange conversation. Panel 2: An open hand, the ember of magic replaced by a fallen tear. The prince looks down at his hand with a blank expression. The man is labeled as Petyr Braelle, with a narrative note "He was usually a pompous ass." Petyr speaks to him, "It is unusual to see you in attendance, your grace." Panel 3: The prince, clearly drunk, responds, "Is attending executions a hobby of yours?" Petyr replies with an annoyed expression, "Unfortunately, it's part of my job. Councilor Braelle has me track how many of the arcanists executed are descendant from Kairos, or rather how many are not. I suppose it is a matter of perspective." The prince thinks, "I thought he was a tax collector" Panel 1: Hazy thoughts are spread across a black background. "Why would his father be interested?" "Councilor Braelle oversees the treasury" "I'm missing something." "Is he saying their family is sympathetic to heretics?" "Why would he tell me?" Panel 2: Petyr says, "You knew him." The prince thinks "No fucking kidding." Panel 3: The prince looks away as he replies, "We were friends. The gossip rags can spin the story however they want." Panel 4: The prince sits beside a young blonde man at a bar. The pair are drinking and smoking, and the blonde places a friendly hand on the prince's shoulder. Panel 5: A partial shot of the hanged man's head, wrapped in cloth with the top of the noose against the backdrop of the gallows trap door. Narration: I don't know if he would have gone so far as to call it that. It's not like our 'friendship' did him any favors in the end. Panel 6: The prince runs a hand through his hair, his expression frustrated, "How can you watch not knowing if they're truly guilty? Is death really proof of anything?" Panel 7: Petyr responds, "Do you think guilt matters to the templars? Their crusade is more important than your sham of a judicial system." Panel 8+9: The prince pulls a flask from his pocket and opens the cap.
