The relevance here is not fear or imminent danger, but rather shooting at the driver did not remedy the danger. Being out of the path of the vehicle was the solution. This was thoughtless and reckless retribution.

They aren't necessarily implying they could get the same result. Anyway, often times the gear is pivotal to increasing the probability of getting a good image, or it's professional reliability you're after. Explain why you chose your gear and how it helps you!

A lot of photographers take umbrage to the notion that the gear is the artist, but often I find that particular remark is common for people that want to skip to the technical part of the equation.

If someone sees a remarkable photo that you took and says "you must have a really nice camera", take that as a compliment.
In fact, take everything as a compliment. They probably meant it that way, and if they didn't, taking it as a compliment will drive them nuts. π

A cursory search of social media posts reveals a rather callous attitude by many who have routinely received flash-flood warnings by cellphone in the past. To be taken seriously, warnings need to be location specific, and reach tourists and campers who are more likely to be in harms way.
