I need to level up my nixOS setup, right now I'm just using a single /etc/nixos/configuration.nix file and it's so messy. It has been a transcendental experience though; this is how computers were meant to work.

Blue Sky web video player needs to add an option to change the playback rate. Normal video files let you right-click and change the playback rate, it's a built-in feature! But for this site I need to run `document.querySelectorAll('video')[1].playbackRate = 2;`.

Great post by jinjin explaining what is meant by optimization in StarCraft Brood War and why it matters so much at the pro level.

A good principle to which social media figures / podcasters / streamers should generally be held is that if they're going to regularly talk about a person they should extend an open invitation to actually have that person on.

Posts like this make me feel very positive about the direction of FirefoxDevTools: feedback is received and quickly converted into something that gets shipped.
I love the bias towards shipping and iterating on things as needed.
Last week I posted about a secret config in Firefox that made view transitions easier to debug.

Folks said we should make it less secret.

So we did.

I was just thinking how 24hr clocks kinda favor the morning hours with short numbers so another way you could solve this is by having the clock run backwards and just count down from 24. I wonder what a culture would look like if they adopted clocks which decrease as time passes.

This is an interesting concept which I haven't seen discussed or explored much. Everyone has a cognitive "fast index". That is the collection of facts or actions that you can access as fast as possible without having to think.

Social media really needs to have an auto-tag / auto-categorization feature so I can break up political topics from everything else. It's an important topic but it just becomes too much at times...

Knowledge really becomes a bit of a curse at times, because it forces you to notice all the minor details.
I learned a tiny bit about audio mixing and it has completely changed my perception of music and audio production in general.
The craziest part is that it disappears when done perfectly.

I love posts like these so much, but it also feels a bit like cursed knowledge because I'll never be able to not notice it going forward. It's like learning kerning -- you become cursed to notice it everywhere.
The attention to detail is superb though.
To do this with the (upcoming) interest invoker API, it's 1 line of code:

.parent:has(:interest-source) button {
interest-show-delay: 0s;
}

You have your default delay. Then, you update the interest delay when an element inside of the parent has interest (i.e. hover).

Reposting because it's still my favorite painting and this is the 1 year anniversary. I'm so happy with how this came out; looking at it always makes me smile.

It's so important to be careful about importing and integrating definitions or models to the point where you believe them. It's too easy to get mindjacked and trapped within a cognitive space, leaving you unable to see beyond the model you accept.

Every few months I've tried asking new LLM releases to solve this basic children's word search puzzle. GPT-5 Thinking is the first model that I've tried which has been able to one-shot this problem! It's not particularly complicated, but every previous LLM has failed or required extra nudging.

We should stop using his last name, from now on he's just Donald. Names have power.
August 31, 2025 at 8:26 AM
On one hand, I feel like LLMs might make it a bit too easy to just keep pressing buttons without fully engaging your brain. On the other hand, holy crap you can just paste the error log and it helps you fix it. This is a boon when dealing with new or unfamiliar environments. Python is cursed.
