#OnThisDay, Nov 15, 1911, Salvador Tió y Montes de Oca was born in Mayagüez Puerto Rico. A poet and cultural promoter, he coined the term "Espanglish," exploring how Spanish and English blend in bilingual communities and shaping the study of language and identity.

#OnThisDay, Nov 11, 1970, The Health Revolutionary Movement & the South Bronx Drug Coalition of the Young Lord Party took over the 6th floor of Lincoln Hospital to implement a drug program to better serve over 40,000 community members struggling with addiction.

#OnThisDay, October 30, 1950, the Jayuya Uprising took place. Nationalist Blanca Canales declared the Puerto Rican Republic, raising the flag for the first time. Rebels took control of Jayuya, opposing U.S. sovereignty, leading to bombing from P-47 Thunderbolt fighter planes.

#OnThisDay, Oct 28, 1879, Luisa Capetillo was born in Arecibo, PR. A labor organizer, feminist & writer, she educated tobacco workers as a lector, fought for suffrage, education & labor rights, and was jailed in 1919 for wearing pants, defying gender norms & inspiring generations.

#OnThisDay, Oct 24, 1935: The Río Piedras Massacre. Police killed four Puerto Rican Nationalists, Ramón S. Pagán, Pedro Quiñones, Eduardo Rodríguez Vega, José Santiago Barea, and bystander Dionisio Pearson. The event deepened the struggle for independence and exposed colonial repression.

#OnThisDay Oct 24, 1892, Rafael Hernández Marín was born in Aguadilla, PR. Known as “El Jibarito,” he rose to become one of Latin America’s greatest composers. From serving with the Harlem Hellfighters in WWI to writing “Preciosa” and “Lamento Borincano”, his music voiced Puerto Rican identity.
