I illustrate pictures of birds my kids picked out to put on their lunchboxes. Previous years have been animals, robots, dinosaurs, and random scenarios.
Inca Doves aren’t big fans of the cold weather, and will huddle together in the sun to stay warm, and when that isn’t enough, they’ll sit on top of each other pyramid-style up to three doves high.

Unlike most ocean-loving Terns, the Black Tern nests farther north in freshwater marshes while feeding primarily on insects instead of fish, but once winter arrives, they migrate back down to the coastlines for sand and seafood.

Partridges are almost exclusively ground-dwelling birds, so you might have to settle with giving your loved one “a partridge somewhere in the vicinity of a pear tree.”

Turtle Doves have been frequently used as symbols of devoted love in literature, including Shakespeare’s works. That’s why you need two of them!

This French hen first appeared in a small village called Faverolles in France. They are known for their unique feather pattern with bearded faces, and have a very sweet, peaceful disposition.

Wondering what a calling bird is? The original phrase from “The Twelve Days Of Christmas” was “four colly birds,” and colly meant black as soot or coal, so the gift on the fourth day was four blackbirds.

It’s theorized that the “five gold rings” in the carol “Twelve Days Of Christmas” is actually referring to Ring-necked Pheasants rather than some fancy jewelry.

Six geese a-laying near each other makes a lot of sense; after the eggs have hatched, some Greylag Geese families will group together in order to better defend their young from predators.

All North American Mute Swans are descended from swans that were imported from Europe during the mid-1800s to early 1900s. I wonder if it all started with seven swans a-swimming across the Atlantic…

Excellent points.
If I had been in college and generative AI could have let me turn a photo or a drawing into a Gustave Dore-style woodcut (something I really wanted to do), I would've used it in a heartbeat, and I never would have learned to define form using cross-contour lines.

House Wren nests can get infested with mites and other parasites that will feed on the nestlings. To combat this, wrens will add spider egg sacs into their nests as they are built so that once the parasites start to appear, the spiders will be there to take care of them.

Most birds with red plumage get their color from pigments produced by plants in their diet. The Western Tanager does not eat any of these types of plants, but the insects it primarily feeds on do, resulting in this bird gaining its red face and head from those pigments indirectly.
