Every scientist, long before they were a scientist, was a little kid who stood in front of a fish tank or stared up at the stars or turned over a rock to look at the bugs underneath and said “wow”. On the best days, working in science still feels like that.

Reminder to those who need it:

1. You can mute the name of the current president and/or anyone else you don't want to constantly hear about here

2. You can mute/block/unfollow accounts that impinge on your calm

3. Social media doesn't have to be a doom scroll, curate your feed to make you happy

I love Chuck, & I think I agree with him here broadly, but I think a lot about how love is a verb, action — not just one action, but all the little actions, choices that accumulate across days, months, years.

So often those actions are as easy as breath. But sometimes they need everything we have.
some buds act like it is so hard to love but it is so easy. you just do nothing. in the absence of all things, we just love. it is what we are built to do. just strip off everything else, all the baggage, and love is underneath

in one of my favorite books of all time - JUNO & JULIET, an Irish romcom by Julian Gough - one character explains to another that constantly pretending to be an asshole as a joke is meaningfully indistinguishable from actually being an asshole, and I've thought about that every day for 24 years
