I don't take issue with esotericism in itself, but I do worry that it frequently lens itself to a sort of imperialist perennialism wherein specific cultural and religious traditions are mined for their "universal truth" (i.e. their ability to give the practitioner power and enlightenment).

Syncretism is of course, generally good, but there's a difference between mystics of different faiths working toward collective growth, and the kind of instrumental relativizing that happens when someone tries to make daoism and Kabbalah kiss without leaving their bedroom.

Why doesn't the US have a general strike? Well you can point to culture or whatever but I think structure is of not immediate use here: does the US have organizations and institutions it can use to network, organize and mobilize a general strike? No.
