As someone who interprets language in a more rigid, literal sense, I don't think they can be considered "reading", though, as I have seen people argue. (But again, no shade on listeners - myself included!)

In case we're not, I do think that using a multiverse (different versions of same settings or characters) to introduce new ideas or characters into the main universe is narratively lame
