My first #vss365 post was on February 19 of last year, and since then I’ve written and posted a poem every day. I’m noodling over ways to celebrate the anniversary with this beloved community next month. Let me know if you have ideas or would like to participate!

Yes, clouds and shadows
Can loom, causing fear and
Anxiety and gloom, but so
Can hope and rays of
Sunshine. So let’s choose
To be the weave that creates
Harmony in weft and groove.

Stop, dear.
Veer away
From fear.
Look here.
This wren
Is clear:
My message
Is now
And always was
Love
For everyone,
By which I mean
The poor,
Brown,
Immigrant,
And
Queer.

Talk or squawk or honk
Yell or murmur
It doesn’t matter
Every human
And more than human
Knows the language
Of mothering care:
You are there
I am here
Stay safe
Be near
Be near

I read multiple drafts of this as it was being written, and cannot recommend it enough; given recent events, it could not be a more salient guide to many of the emotions we are feeling every day now.

Sometimes while knitting
I come across a dapple
Of difference in the skein,
And my mind whirls
To a scene of sheep,
Smell of lanolin on
Me as my newborn
Sleeps, rising in memory,
And I think this is
Why we are here,
To touch skin to wool
To skin again, love made
Visible and clear.

Through the window I peer
Inside the image does sear
A day when no birds appear
Because no trees are near
But until then we are here
Watching what we hold dear
And fighting against fear.

She has been a powerful voice on anti-colonialism and resisting Native erasure. She's still writing, and has a collection coming out later this year!

I think her piece "How to Write a Poem in a Time of War" is EXACTLY what we all need right now.

So far in this series on resistance #poets I've only covered folks from the past. Today I want to introduce you to Joy Harjo. A member of the Muscogee (Creek) nation and the United States' first Native American #poet laureate. Just to name a few achievements.

Sometimes the sun
Sees all we’ve done
And pauses in its run
For a final moment,
A heartfelt one,
To look upon us
With compassion.

There once was donkey named Pete
Who was clearly quite wonky on feet
So he highjacked a plane
And made missiles to rain
But still chicks refused his dark meat

Here in the South,
When I walk the loop
So my dog can poop,
People sit on the stoop
Saying, Hey, hear the scoop?
Or, How bout them hoops?

As nice as this seems,
There are folks on the street
Who haven’t been seen
Since the year turned mean.

Loop. Poop. Scoop. Regroup.

Slapdash doesn’t mean you don’t care.

It means you have a job kids spouse mouths to feed no inherited wealth collective trauma and ongoing bigotry against your race class gender sexuality humanity.

It means you’re still writing anyway.

For the rest of us, there is a hole in our hearts the size of a warship where already we are planting the desire to save the planet from the impermissible.

My delivery of birdseed coincides with the bus coming by to get kids for school, and this bluebird alights to say that we, too, will make it through this fascist rule, as Native and enslaved peoples did, with so many who stayed or fled, but survived. Like the birds, stayed alive.
