My hot take on the big-deal Evita revival in London (which I did see, located as it is at the intersection of my gay interests in musicals and Latin America) is that it weirdly implies that Evita wouldn’t have died so tragically if Perón hadn’t resisted Britain’s informal imperialism in Argentina.

The only time I ever saw him speak, in 2010, he gave a terrible speech about how European cultures were simply superior to those of the global south. But Conversación en la catedral still blew my mind. He was an independent thinker like no other, I’ll give him that. elpais.com/cultura/2025...

I’m no defender of Columbia (or Harvard for that matter), but if its administration is so quick to comply with Tr*mp and his minions, there’s little hope for resistance from less powerful institutions (like the one I work for, for example).
