My favorite genre is plays. I read them to better write them. My favorite challenge? Trying to get almost everything into dialogue to tell the story. #bookvember #writesky #booksky

Probably my favorite play I’ve read so far. Beautiful, bittersweet, funny. The complete package. Love The Clean House by Sarah Ruhl. #bookvember #writesky #booksky

One part of Fear of Flying really showed me—when Jong writes about not wanting to get pregnant and whether that was a valid feeling to have as a woman. I found myself in that moment. A connection. #bookvember #writesky #booksky

The Expanse series by James S.A. Corey, which I’ve only started, is pretty amazing in terms of world building. The Belters are a fascinating group, and I can’t help but pull for them in terms of politics so far. #booksky #writesky #bookvember

Roxane Gay’s essay collection, Bad Feminist, came to me at a crucial moment in life and her story of her own experience enmeshed in what it means to be a feminist for your own cause gave me direction. #bookvember #writesky #booksky

Samuel R. Delany’s Dhalgren is one of the most unexpected, compelling books I think I’ve ever read. Sci fi about a drifter, The Kid, who ends up in a post-apocalyptic city knowing little about his own past. He weaves through the place non-linearly and I had to find out the end. #bookvember

If I have to pick one of Marlon James’ books, I guess it’s Black Leopard, Red Wolf. But I love all of his I’ve read so far. Still, The Dark Star Trilogy is top notch. Highly recommend to all. LGBTQIA+ friendly. A dark tale full of magic and you feel completely immersed in his Africa.

I liked Rita Mae Brown’s Rubyfruit Jungle. The protagonist, Molly, always chooses to go her own way instead of merely going with the norm. A good lesson for us all. #bookvember #writesky #booksky

I don’t know how many folks I’ve suggested Possession to. Historical metafiction at its zenith. Maud is canny, smart, fragile. She transforms as the trail of her ancestor reveals itself, giving her greater purpose and power. #bookvember #writesky #booksky

My mom phrased it thus: maybe it’s not time for you to read this book yet. I believe that gave me a very healthy outlook towards reading, because I knew I could read it some day. Nothing seemed totally off-limits.

Doesn’t mean I didn’t sneak at times though.

The Tasha Tudor Book of Fairy Tales. Don’t know how many times I went to that book for comfort. #bookvember #writesky #booksky

I remember Mrs. Hibbs reading The Giving Tree to us in first grade reading class. And then the librarian, Miss Ackerson, told me Shel Silverstein had more books.

The rest is history.

But don’t a lot of kids books read like poetry? I love it.

Not a children’s book, but Anne Frank’s Diary of a Young Girl was likely the first nonfiction that I recall hitting me hard. I can’t remember how many times I read it. #bookvember #writesky #booksky

I had a few that kept me coming back to reading—Lois Lowry for sure (loved Anastasia Krupnik!), Judy Blume, Beverly Cleary, and when I was older I had a long Cynthia Voigt stint. #bookvember #authors #booksky #writesky

Tuck Everlasting stuck with me (immortality?!). The Emily of New Moon series (no diss to Anne just love Emily more as a character). I Am A Bunny is the first favorite I remember though, and liking the part about watching the animals prep for winter. Love to watch them do that now. #bookvember #books

I’m Marcie.

Reading is something I don’t ever remember not doing—with a teacher for a mom, how could it have been absent? And our whole family reads!

Writing I dabbled in, coming to do it seriously later in life after a great free poetry workshop I took. #booksky #writesky #bookvember

Don’t know how to feel about this one either.

First, the cover is not a history book IMHO.

And how does a book on the Tudors let the Dudleys have the final word?

Suspicious.

Top three books for me this week, because sometimes it changes:

A.S. Byatt: Possession
Arundhati Roy: The God of Small Things
Mary Shelley: Frankenstein

Do you have three you love this week?

“No mere human can stand in a fire and not be consumed.”

Probably my all-time favorite book. Needs a re-read soon.

A. S. Byatt’s Possession.
