Evaluation as an academic administrator should be a 1 question test:

1) Did you ever hire an external company to provide recommendation letter collation that requires each letter writer to make a unique login?

If so, you lose your job and never get another one.

~ 1000 astro bachelors degrees given out last year, a new record, while most grad programs are planning to admit fewer students this year (due to reduced or uncertain federal funding).

'hycean' is a terrible word. hydrogen means "water forming" (since, when burned, hydrogen produced water). ocean is stream or body of water enclosing a large land mass. so hycean means water forming body of water.

noticing some claims that o1 is "smarter than the median PhD student". this seems to involve a mental model for what a PhD student is that is...not close to my mental model.

There seem to be some misconceptions about Rubin transient alerts coming from this article. There are in fact *no* delays for alerts, which will be issued within 60 seconds (including a postage stamp around the alert). The 3+ day delay is on the full focal plane images.
That’s an absolutely crazy story 🤯 Also what are US secret agencies gonna do about non US based facilities mapping the sky?Could they could force similar procedures on other survey telescopes?

Sheldon has an astro undergrad degree from MSU and his job managing radio frequency interference is a great example of a job you can get *without* getting a PhD
Now at the CORF Meeting (Livestream: vimeo.com/event/4686731) we're going to hear from Sheldon Wasik about work Protecting the National Radio Quiet Zone. 🔭👩‍🔬🧪

The person in front of me on this 8 hour flight has had the map zoomed in for 6 hours now. Not in the cool way where you can see what part of Greenland you are over. But the ultra zoomed in way, where you can infer the flap position of the simulated A330 but see nothing else.
