Birkbeck, University of London, is seeking a Lecturer in Medieval Studies to join our dynamic team within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Autumn 2026. As Lecturer in Medieval Studies you will contribute to the teaching of Medieval English literature and Medieval history across the Faculty, within our School of Creative Arts, Culture and Communication, and School of Historical Studies - this includes our BA English and BA History programmes, as well as postgraduate taught programmes in the two subject areas. This post is offered on a permanent contract at Birkbeck, full time 35 hours per week, with a salary of £44,247 rising to £60,858 per year. Teaching hours will vary from 6pm - 9pm, Monday to Friday. To be successful, you will bring research expertise in the literature, history and culture of the Late Medieval period (c.1300-1500), and demonstrate a capacity to contribute to interdisciplinary research and teaching, participate actively in curriculum development, supervise doctoral students, and help shape the intellectual life of our vibrant academic community. We would also welcome applicants who would be able to contribute to collaborative teaching programmes or research in the Faculty, in areas such as identity, race/ethnicity, or gender - experience of collaboration with cultural institutions, whether through research or teaching, is also welcome. Core responsibilities will initially include programme/module administration, teaching, supervision, assessment, student support and pastoral care. You will also be equipped to supervise doctoral students. With a PhD in any area of Medieval Studies, you will contribute the Faculty’s and Schools’ research impact and culture, and to the intellectual and cultural life of the institution and the various communities and partners with whom we work and serve.

Appel à communications VOUS ÊTES SUR UNE TERRE INDIGÈNE: COMPRENDRE LES ÉTUDES MÉDIÉVALES SUR L'ÎLE DE LA TORTUE RÉUNION ANNUELLE DE LA SOCIÉTÉ CANADIENNE DES MEDIÉVISTES 2026 / 2026 La commission EDID de la SCM / CSM lance un appel à contributions sur l'indigénéité et le médiéval. Plus d'une décennie s'est écoulée depuis que la Commission de vérité et de réconciliation a publié son rapport et 94 appels à l'action. Le monde universitaire a été appelé à décoloniser, réconcilier et indigéniser son approche à la recherche, l'érudition et la salle de classe. Cette séance s'appuie sur les excellentes conversations de la table ronde « Slow Engagement » du Congrès international d'études médiévales 2025, qui a demandé aux à la communauté de recherche médiévale de réfléchir à la manière donton a ralenti pour être responsables et réciproques dans son apprentissage, son approche et son engagement avec les études indigènes. • Comment pouvons-nous nous engager de manière respectueuse et appropriée avec les méthodologies indigènes dans nos approches des études médiévales? • Comment les communautés indigènes ont-elles réagi, se sont-elles engagées, ont-elles subverti ou se sont-elles approprié les études médiévales ou le médiévalisme? • A quoi ressemblent les engagements personnels et/ou de recherche avec les communautés, les identités et la préservation du savoir indigène pour différentes personnes en études médiévales, et quels sont les enseignements tirés de ces engagements? • Quel a été l'impact du colonialisme sur la discipline des études médiévales? Call for Papers YOU ARE ON NATIVE LAND: UNDERSTANDING MEDIEVAL STUDIES IN TURTLE ISLAND 2026 ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE CANADIAN SOCIETY OF MEDIEVALISTS / RÉUNION ANNUELLE DE LA SOCIÉTÉ CANADIENNE DES MÉDIÉVISTES 2026 The EDID Committee of the CSM/SCM invites papers on Indigeneity and the medieval. It has been over a decade since the Truth and Reconciliation Commission released their report and 94 Calls to Action. Academia was called to decolonize, reconcile, and Indigenize their apporach to research, scholarship, and the classroom. This panel builds on conversations from the 2025 International Congress of Medieval Studies' "Slow Engagement" Roundtable, which asked medieval scholars to consider how they've 'slowed down' to be responsible and reciprocal in their learning, approaching, or engaging with Indigenous Studies. PAPERS MIGHT CONSIDER: • How can we respectfully and appropriately engage with Indigenous methodologies in our approaches to medieval studies? • How have indigenous communities responded to, engaged with, subverted, or appropriated medieval studies or medievalism? • What do personal and/or scholarly engagements with Indigenous communities, identities, and Knowledge Keepers look like for diffferent medievalists, and what has been learned from such engagements? • What has been the impact of colonialism on the discipline of medieval studies? Alternately, how have medieval studies been an essential tool in colonialism? Presentations may be in either English or French and should be 15-20 minutes in length. Another day, another session summary! To begin, Katherine Pierpont used municipal records to trace the presence of troubadours and jongleurs in medieval Toulouse. Her work enables her to sometimes place individuals in precise domiciles and allows her to start to understand their social networks.
