Its Criterion reissue in September is utterly essential. It is a truly complete official presentation, pulling together the in and out-of-character commentaries, all the ancillary stuff, all looking great, with even more outtakes than ever. You need it. Just get it. Honor the man and the work.

RIP Rob & Michele Reiner
His movies gave me so much happiness.
He directed the funniest movie I’ve ever watched and provided wonderful straight man support to Christopher Guest in its funniest scene: youtu.be/uMSV4OteqBE?...

Wake Up Dead Man (2025): the latest Knives Out whodunit is as a
entertaining a trifle as the others, with the by now familiar Christie-esque beats, allstar cast (Josh O’Connor in particular shining as a pugilistic priest) & wry humour. Perfect holidays fare then if unlikely to linger on. 8/10

This World Cup, even after the tawdry spectacles of Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022 is looking like the most craven disgrace for FIFA yet. Blatter must be wondering what he got wrong.

Mission Impossible The Final Reckoning (2025): the 8th & last(?) instalment of the Cruiser’s globetrotting franchise brings the expected thrills & spills & tries to tie the whole 30 year journey up with a bow. The best way of putting it is if you liked the others, you’ll like this. I do & did 8/10.

Executive Decision (1996): said comfort watch was a run of the mill actioner I’d not previously seen, essentially Die Hard on a Plane & as dated as the premise & stars (Russell, Seagal, Berry) would suggest. The most interesting plotline was David Suchet’s jihadist, strangely prescient. 5.5/10
Comfort watching an old movie and the whole narrative of the noble US is jarring.

Tree’s up. Early maybe & I’d possibly have been disparaging in the past… but the kids are delighted & we could all use some cheer after a hard year. An easy win.

I mean, I could chuck together a 50 tonight…
I’m only checking in here every now and again and missed this latest pop excitement. Will be following Billy and others and may well drop a playlist of my own at the end of the journey.

This one’s a banger, btw

Bob Dylan in Glasgow tonight: crepuscular, powerful, swampy, tender, dazzling. R&RW material really stands up in this setting. What an experience.

A House Of Dynamite (2025): Kathryn Bigelow’s latest underlines her mastery of high tech vérité w/ a Rashomonesque reaction to an incoming ICBM, allowing Ferguson, Elba, Harris, Basso and Letts to excel, their competence & integrity pointedly both insufficient & at odds w/ where we are today. 8/10

A catastrophically ill judged appointment, a style over substance BS merchant with a monumental ego was never going to cut it here playing turgid Pep possession football with a bunch of poorly scouted and overpriced kids from the arse ends of English football. A car crash from beginning to end.
