An osprey on migration. They don't breed in Costa Rica, though youngsters might live there for a while. Just one of the many birds seen on the first day!

One morning while we were at Arenal in the centre of Costa Rica, we booked a dawn birdwatching tour and spotted 42 species in a couple of hours.

Sat for breakfast, reviewing what we had seen, this black-cheeked woodpecker came and sat on this log

Travelling on a boat through a mangrove swamp in Costa Rica, there was this lovely long curved branch hanging over the water with about 20 whimbrels on it. These are wading birds, related to sandpipers

The broad-billed motmot. Apparently fairly common in the centre of Costa Rica, and we did see a few in both Arenal and Monteverde.

Along the beach in Tortuguero, this little turtle hatchling was stuck under some leaves near the back of the beach and unable to get out! Once uncovered, she started her journey to the sea, accompanied by us so that the birds circling above couldn't get to her.

A pair of bare-throated tiger herons. I spent about an hour watching the male displaying and preening and puffing himself up, trying to impress her.

She flew away.

Incredibly, we saw 7 species of heron and 3 types of egret while we were in Costa Rica.

Costa Rica has four species of monkey: howler, spider, white-faced and squirrel, and we were lucky enough on our travels to see all four.

In three of the four hotels we stayed in, we had the pleasure of being woken up by these guys, howler monkeys.

One of the animals I wanted to see in Costa Rica was a sloth!

I was lucky to see this awake one, seeing as they sleep about 16 hours a day. We saw this two-toed sloth on our first day!

Most sloths we saw after this were high up in trees curled in a ball.

I'm just back from two weeks in Costa Rica and wow! What a country!

161 species of bird in 2 weeks!

This is a keel-billed toucan who was hanging out near our hotel in Tortuguero on the Caribbean coast.
